This week, commencing 14th January, students on the applied science course were making esters.  Esters are chemicals which are found in nature that have a smell.  Some esters have nice smells and some have horrible smells.  Students reacted a carboxylic acid and an alcohol with concentrated sulphuric acid to make thier esters.
