Safeguarding at Harrow Way

Harrow Way is committed to ensuring that anyone who engages with the school, child, adult and the community, are cared for in a safe and secure environment. To fulfil this commitment, a number of safeguarding arrangements are in place.

Policy and Procedures
We will ensure all policies and procedures in respect of safeguarding children are up-to-date and in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education. The key policies are accessible on the school website under Safeguarding Policy and Child Protection Policy. Policies and procedures are reviewed and revised by the governing body on a regular basis.

Governing Body Responsibilities
The Full Governing Body has oversight of our safeguarding responsibilities. Governors receive annual training on safeguarding and a number of governors have had specific additional training. Our school governor with responsibility for safeguarding is our Chair of Governors, Mrs Tanya Hampton.

Disclosure, Barring Checks and Recruitment
Harrow Way Community School meets statutory requirements in relation to the Disclosure & Barring Service, all staff and volunteers who work with the school who meet the regulated activity test (Freedoms Act 2012), are required to undergo an enhanced DBS check prior to employment.

On every interview panel there is at least one person with current safer recruitment training accreditation.

Safeguarding Training
All eligible staff and volunteers are required to undertake annual safeguarding training and this is regularly reviewed, this includes training on the prevent agenda.

Staff have on going safeguarding training throughout the year which is led by the safeguarding team during staff briefings, meetings, training sessions and the sharing of relevant information.

Prevent Duty

Harrow Way is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its pupils. As a school we recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation is no different from safeguarding against any other vulnerability.

The Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a legal duty on public bodies (including schools) to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.

As part of Harrow Way’s commitment to safeguarding and child protection we fully support the government’s Prevent Strategy.
We ensure we:

    • Teach a broad and balanced curriculum; students receive education around this topic through PSHE and RE lessons
    • Promote fundamental British values
    • Assess the risk of pupils being drawn into terrorism and support for extremism
    • Train key staff to give them the knowledge and confidence to identify children who may be vulnerable to radicalisation and know what to do when they are identified.
    • Protect children from terrorist and extremist material when accessing the internet at school
    • Ensure robust safeguarding policies are in place to identify children at risk, intervene and refer students as appropriate

The school delivers its training on the Department of Education’s Statutory guidance:
