A GROUP of young unemployed people from Andover returned to school to gain new skills through a Prince’s Trust community project which saw a tatty and overgrown courtyard transformed into a smart and accessible library garden at Harrow Way School. The young people, all aged between 16 and 25, chose to work on the library garden because they wanted to put something back into the community.
The new user-friendly area can be accessed from the library and has a gazebo, decking and a number of plants – providing a real alternative to sitting in the Library.
The young people went to the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens to gain inspiration for their vision and to Waitrose for finance, raising £940 through bag packing and carrying shopping to cars.
The 12 week programme put together by the Prince’s Trust is backed by staff from the Hampshire Fire and Rescue and also involves team building, work experience and how to write CV’s.
