Friday 12th June 2026

Good Afternoon,

Anyone who thinks the summer term is a quieter time in schools clearly hasn't visited Harrow Way this week! It has been a wonderful reminder of what makes our school community so special.

On Wednesday evening, we were delighted to open the doors of our Art department to showcase the excellent work of our Year 11 students. The exhibition marked the culmination of two years of dedication, creativity, and hard work, not only during lessons, but through countless hours spent refining pieces at home.

The event was organised by Mrs Hughes, our Curriculum Leader for Art, who, alongside our Art teachers, has inspired our students to produce work of a high standard. Earlier in the day, we hosted our visiting GCSE Art moderator, who was complimentary about the quality, creativity and technical skill evident throughout the exhibition. We are hopeful that the final marks will reflect the wonderful work produced by our students.

Thank you and congratulations to Mrs Hughes and the entire Art team for curating a fantastic exhibition – and for supporting our students to express themselves so confidently and creatively through their work.

Last night, our annual Harrow Way’s Got Talent event was a wonderful celebration of the remarkable talents within our student body. It was a joy to witness our students’ courage and creativity as they took to the stage. One parent wrote to me afterwards to say how impressed they were by the number of students who felt “safe and supported enough to get up in front of the school community and perform their hearts out,” adding that it “speaks volumes about the ethos” of the school. I couldn’t agree more. I am very proud of the willingness of our students to challenge themselves, encourage one another and celebrate each other’s successes.

Congratulations to all who took part – you made the evening unforgettable. The Audience’s Choice award went to the Year 7 student band ‘12 Hours Sleep’ which included Rosetta, Sienna, Anna, Kalel & Ruby, while the Judges’ Winners were two students who captivated everyone with their guitar and song performance. Congratulations to Alana and Jasmine.

A special thanks to the Heads of House for organising and Mr Manson, our brilliant Head of Performing Arts, whose expert compering brought the whole event together.

Today, we said farewell to our Year 11 students with a Leavers’ Assembly that reflected their time at Harrow Way beautifully. This year group has truly embraced all that the school has to offer. Beyond their lessons and enrichment activities, they’ve formed lasting friendships and worked closely with staff who have always believed in them.

Mrs Woodhead and her team of tutors took the opportunity to reflect on the wonderful journey we’ve been on with these students and yes, some questionable uniform choices along the way! Through it all, they’ve grown into resilient, thoughtful, and courageous young people, and we couldn’t be prouder.

After the assembly, students gathered on the field for a final year group photo while the rest of the school lined the pathways in a touching guard of honour, cheering them on as they left the site.  We are immensely proud of each and every one of them. We wish them every success and happiness as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. It is a privilege to work alongside such wonderful staff, supportive families and remarkable young people; I am very proud of all that our school community achieves together.

I wish you all an enjoyable weekend.
Mrs Dawn German

Good News Section

Scientific Success
In May, 78 Year 10 Science students took part in the National Scientific Thinking Challenge, run in association with the University of Warwick. The challenge required students to apply their scientific knowledge and reasoning skills to tackle a series of demanding and thought-provoking questions. More than 16,000 students from 255 schools across the country, including grammar and independent schools, participated in this year's competition. We are very proud of all our students for embracing this challenge and representing the school so well.

Following their impressive performances, students were presented with Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates during the Year 10 assembly this week. The  University of Warwick commented: "It is amazing for us to see how well your students do at this. Some of those questions were hard! Thank you for encouraging them and for teaching them so well."

This fantastic achievement reflects both the dedication of our students and the high-quality teaching they receive in Science.

GCSE Contingency Day 2026
The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has set aside Wednesday 24th June as the GCSE Contingency Day 2026. This means that pupils need to be available up until this day to sit an examination even if their timetabled examinations finish sooner. The reason for this day "is to reschedule exams if a national incident or widespread disruption prevents them from taking place as planned, ensuring all students have a fair chance". If a pupil is unable to attend this date "they will be considered absent and will not receive a grade for that component". We therefore strongly advise that you do not make any plans to go on holiday until after this date.

Date for Year 11 Parent/Carer Diaries

GCSE Results will be available to collect from the Auditorium between 10.00 am and 11.30 am on Thursday 20th August 2026.

This week you can find out more about what studying at university is like with Unifrog's mini-masterclasses; choose from business, psychology, law, education, creative & performing arts, and engineering.

Our Labour Market Information section is dedicated to helping students explore what freelancing in the creative industries is really like, and with Futures For All you can find both virtual and in-person work experience opportunities taking place over the summer holidays; something really positive to add to CVs.  Talking of CVs, Dale Willis from My Great First Job explains how to write a great first CV; useful viewing for those hoping to find a part-time job or applying for apprenticeships.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE UPDATE

Students can enter a 100 word story competition to win a £100 Amazon voucher and have the chance to be a published author. Families can purchase the edition in which their child is published. Details here from the organisers, Young Writers. Many Harrow Way students have had publishing success when submitting their creative writing to Young Writers.

Our World Cup display is now up. We have 70+ physical books and there are around 200 on SORA , our digital platform. There are also magazines on SORA. With the theme of the National Year of Reading being ' whatever you're into, read into it ', the World Cup represents a valuable opportunity to engage students with reading across a range of formats.

We marked Empathy Day on the 11th with books and discussions.

More new stock arrived and was made available. To be able to provide this, loans must be returned in good condition on time. Should this not be the case, our reimbursement policy will apply. Items are charged at £5.00 each. This does not cover our replacement costs. Students receive regular automated email reminders to their school email account when they have overdue items. Thank you for your support in encouraging responsible borrowing.

For Year 6 students joining us in September, we recommend these books to support the transition. Go Big by Matthew Burton and Moving Up by Christian Foley. You can find out about the Learning Resource Centre and Library at our website and in the Welcome Pack. Students will receive an induction during September but can use the Learning Resource Centre and Library as soon as they join. You can email us here.

SPORTING NEWS

Rounders
On Tuesday we took a Year 7 and Year 8 team over to Testbourne for a friendly fixture. For the Year 7’s, this was their first taste of competition and a good practice in preparation for the upcoming District tournaments.

A tremendous effort by the Year 7’s saw them losing by only 2 ½ runs against a team that had a couple of Year 8’s playing to make up their numbers. The opposition awarded Alex as Best Batter and Lara as Best fielder in her role as bowler.

The Year 8’s kept the scores tight in the first innings, only trailing by 1 ½ runs. However, some excellent batting by the opposition in the second innings stretched their lead to an overall score of 13 ½ to 6. There is still plenty of time to practice and improve, with their tournament coming at the end of June. Best batter went to Riya where as Best fielder was given to Hollie S.

Year 10 Tournament
The Year 10 team once again dominated the District Rounders tournament on Wednesday, making it an unbeaten 4 wins in 4 years. The team, largely unchanged throughout their time at Harrow Way, have become a real force to be reckoned with, with all members contributing to the batting totals, and slick fielding skills that prevented rounders even from the best of hits.

Their commitment to the Rounders Club and superb team spirit should be commended as this has been the main factor in their success (along with some excellent teaching!!).

Congratulations!
