Friday 5th December 2025

Good Afternoon,

Many of you will be aware of the incident that occurred outside school yesterday morning, when a student was struck by a car. This was understandably distressing for everyone involved. Students were getting off the bus in heavy rain and rushing to cross the road. One student stepped out without looking and collided with an oncoming vehicle. It was a frightening moment for the child and a dreadful shock for the driver. The student was taken to Winchester Hospital, and we are all deeply relieved and grateful to know that she is now doing well.

Given the upcoming anniversary of a similar incident last year, which had a far more tragic outcome, this was an emotional time. We will be speaking to students again in school about road safety, but I would also ask parents and carers to take a moment to reinforce this message at home. A few seconds of vigilance can prevent life-changing consequences.

In the midst of the worry, I was incredibly proud to hear how two of our Year 10 students responded. They showed remarkable courage, compassion and maturity in helping the younger student, reflecting our Harrow Way values of kindness and resilience. I was delighted to award them both Headteacher Commendations today, along with a small treat for the weekend.

In happier news, we have now announced the successful candidate elected as Hampshire Youth Parliament’s School Councillor. Canvassing intensified this week, with students running impressive campaigns and a steady stream of voters visiting our own polling station in the library. It has been a wonderful real-life lesson in democracy. As our Citizenship teachers reminded students, your vote only counts if you use it! With 15% of the vote, I am delighted to share that Rosetta Hindley will represent Harrow Way for the next two years. Huge congratulations to them.

I have been especially proud of our Student Council this week. They have delivered assemblies to Years 7–10, sharing updates from recent meetings and explaining how their discussions have shaped decisions and improvements across the school. Their confidence and sense of responsibility have been fantastic to see.

Our Student Leadership Team — our Head Prefects and Deputy Head Prefects — also used this platform to speak passionately about inclusion and diversity, a topic close to our Head Girl’s heart. She spoke about this at interview and is determined to make a meaningful difference this year.

The team shared that within our school community we speak 22 different languages, with many students fluent in more than one — something that, as you can imagine, means a great deal to me. We are proud of the rich mix of cultures, languages and backgrounds that make Harrow Way such a vibrant place to learn.

Together, we have already begun planning ways to celebrate this diversity, including creating a world map highlighting where our students and staff come from, introducing a “language of the month” so we can all learn some key phrases, and working with our canteen to offer themed dishes from around the world. This is an important piece of work to ensure every child feels seen, valued and most importantly, that they belong here.

I wish you all a restful weekend.
Mrs Dawn German

Assembly - Student Council
The Student Council led this week's assemblies and did a great job of explaining to their peers the outcomes of discussions with Mrs German. Also on the assembly agenda was an introduction to the school's focus on our EAL students. This was led by the senior members of the Student Council who were amazed by the fact that at Harrow Way, there are over 20 different languages spoken daily! Mr Mann.

Reporting Absence via the MyChildAtSchool (MCAS) App
From Monday 8th December, you will now be able to report your child’s absence via the MCAS parent app, going forward this will be our preferred method of notification.

Below is an image of  how and where it appears on your child’s Dashboard. Click on Report an Absence and complete the form.

You can also use this to notify the school if you child will be arriving late or needs to leave early for an appointment.

Ways Forward

Ways Forward - our weekly newsletter for Careers, Apprenticeship, College, Work and Work Experience.

There are important messages for Year 11 and Year 10 in Ways Forward this week: For Year 11 - many college and sixth form application deadlines are coming up very soon - don't forget to submit your applications. For Year 10 students - have you found a work experience placement yet? Now is a great time to start your search if you haven't already done so.

This week you can also find out more about careers in planetary science, aviation, armed forces, and there's an interesting February half-term virtual work experience opportunity that students might like to apply for.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE UPDATE

We have enjoyed a busy week with students coming in to cast their vote for their choice of Hampshire Youth Parliament representative for Harrow Way. Voting was anonymous and an authentic ballot box and Polling Station signage were in use. Thank you to the PTA for sourcing these resources!  Thank you also to our Year 11 Library Prefect for counting votes with us and to Mrs Blair for supporting voters with me. As this is a public facing role with Hampshire County Council, we have some due diligence to carry out with parental permissions. A rewards breakfast with Mrs German will take place next Thursday morning to recognise the effort and commitment of all who put themselves forward as candidates and for others who have been a part of the overall process. We are very proud of these young people and have enjoyed promoting this for the benefit of the wider school.

SPORTING NEWS

Year 7 Rudolph Run Raises Festive Cheer and Funds for Local Hospice
On Tuesday, our fantastic Year 7 students took part in the annual Rudolph Run, raising money in aid of the Countess of Brecknock Hospice—a local charity close to the hearts of many in Andover and within the Harrow Way school community.

The year group had an absolute blast, filling the school grounds with festive spirit as they dashed around in antlers and bright red noses. Laughter, excitement, and plenty of Christmas cheer made the event a memorable highlight of the season.

In a thrilling finish, the first Year 7 boy to cross the line was Sam Chewins, narrowly tipping Hamzah Kashifi right at the end. The first girl to finish was Mayana Furtado, completing an impressive performance from our young runners.

Students are now busy gathering sponsorship, with many taking on extra jobs at home to raise additional funds for this worthwhile cause. We look forward to announcing the grand fundraising total during the Year 7 Christmas lunch.

A huge well done to all who took part and helped support such an important local charity. Your energy, enthusiasm, and kindness truly embody the spirit of the season!

Year 7-11 Girls Football Trip
Tuesday evening we took 15 of our football players to see the Lionesses play a friendly match against Ghana at St. Mary's Stadium, Southampton. It was a fantastic opportunity for our girls to see their role models and to see female football being played at its highest level.

We were treated to two goals during the game with an incredible view of Russo's penalty in the last few minutes, just before the final whistle. Some of our girls have never been to a professional football match, and this was certainly a great introduction to the beautiful game.

Year 9B Netball Match Report vs Testbourne
On a dark and damp afternoon, the 9B netball team took on Testbourne in a challenging away fixture. Conditions were far from ideal, but the team showed great determination from the first whistle.

The first half proved difficult, with slippery courts and fading light making passing and movement harder than usual. Despite this, the girls worked tirelessly in defence and managed to keep the scoreline tight, staying within two goals at half-time.

In the third quarter, the team settled into a calmer, more controlled rhythm, with the centre court players Erika, Izzy and Ivana making smarter passes and timing their drives more effectively. This shift in play paid off, and they clawed the score back to within one goal, putting real pressure on Testbourne and shifting the momentum of the match.

However, as the game moved into the fourth quarter, the weather worsened. With the temperature dropping and the court growing darker, the team began to lose some of the sharpness they had built up. Testbourne capitalised on this, pulling ahead in the final minutes. The match ended with a 10–5 win to Testbourne, but the scoreline didn’t fully reflect the effort, teamwork, and resilience shown throughout the game.

A commendable performance in tough conditions—well done to all the Year 9 players for their determination and positive attitude and a special mention to Holly and Lily for stepping up from Year 8 for their first game with the Year 9’s.
Players of the match - Ivana and Izzy.

Safeguarding Update

We have been made aware of a pop-up that is appearing on Roblox, encouraging children to download an app called pollybuzz (or pollyfuzz in some spelling cases). The app seems quite simple where children are asked questions, and it generates an Artificial Intelligence ‘friend’ – this starts off quite innocently but then begins to show extreme content (including suicide, self-harm and pornography). It may be helpful to remind children about not clicking on pop-ups in games and to report anything that is worrying or inappropriate to a trusted adult. It may also be helpful to communicate with parents about this. Roblox has parental controls and instructions of how to put these on can be accessed via this link:
Parental Controls Overview – Roblox Support.
Please remember that parental controls will stop some pop-ups, but not all, so appropriate supervision is still required.
