This week, our Year 10 students had the fantastic opportunity to work with the Prept.Foundation, a charity dedicated to enhancing food education and equipping students with essential life skills. Alongside chefs from Lainston House, a prestigious 5-star hotel in Winchester - whose Head Chef is also a MasterChef: The Professionals champion - our students explored the art of cooking and food presentation and gained insight into potential career pathways within the diverse world of hospitality. What an inspiring and memorable experience for our young people! Further sessions will follow.

Experiences like these form an important part of our commitment to preparing students for life beyond school. We are very proud of our Careers curriculum, which earned us the Gold Award for Careers last year, reflecting the high quality of careers education we provide. While teaching workplace skills in the classroom is vital, contact with employers truly brings these lessons to life.
Last night, we also launched our Year 10 Work Experience programme. Last year, every student participated in this valuable, weeklong opportunity, and we hope to inspire the same engagement again this year. Work Experience offers students a genuine insight into the world of work, an environment very different from school and is an essential step in helping them develop the skills and confidence they will need to succeed in the future.

At Harrow Way, we also recognise the importance of contributing to our wider community. Just as we encourage students to explore the world of work and develop life skills, we strive to show them that small actions can have a big impact. This week, I was delighted to congratulate Connor in Year 8, who took part in the recent Moonlight Walk in aid of St Michael's Hospice in Basingstoke. I presented him with a Headteacher Commendation for his incredible efforts to raise vital funds for charity. Connor’s dedication not only made a real difference but also inspired his peers, who asked many thoughtful questions about the walk and how they too might contribute.

To end the week on a high, we celebrated the dedication of our Year 11 prefects. Over recent weeks, we have welcomed a record number of prospective parents into school, with our prefect body leading tours, answering questions, and reassuring potential students. They have been superb ambassadors for our school. I have received so many warm and effusive emails from visitors praising their confidence and ability. In recognition of their outstanding efforts and continued commitment to their role, we treated them to delicious cakes from Burbidge’s Bakery, which were very much enjoyed. A lovely way to finish the week!

Year 11 Important Information

The Key to Success in English Language As parents will know, all students must obtain a Grade 4 or better in English Language GCSE. If they do not achieve this, they have to resit the examination. The English Department is offering a guided walkthrough of the EDUQAS English Language examinations on Tuesday 14th October at school starting at 18.00.
This session is designed to help Year 11 parents understand the structure and question types on both English Language examination papers. It will provide practical advice on revision, exam technique, and what examiners are looking for, so you can support your son or daughter.
Please complete this form to let us know if you would like to attend so we can provide enough resources and book a suitable room in school.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE UPDATE
|
|
|
We are glad to be able to buy new books each half-term and initiatives like this one can be helpful too. If you purchase from this site, you can nominate us to receive 25% of the cover price for us to buy more books.
We have been raising awareness of dyslexia this week with an information stand, posters of famous dyslexics in the LRC and around school, and putting our large collection of dyslexia friendly print books front and centre on display. One of our year 7 dyslexic students hand wrote an information sheet - this was unprompted and independent! Using our online platform SORA, readers can customise their page to suit their needs or use the pre-set dyslexia settings. On Reading Cloud, students can access the list of dyslexia friendly print books under Reading Lists. Link to both of these here.
A new addition to the Library at the LRC is our author letters and messages file. Students can read these in the Book Nook. It can be inspiring and aspirational to hear from published writers. We are regularly in touch with several authors.
One of our year 10 students has recently had a book published - we have bought a copy and she will be coming into one of our NatterReads lunchtime sessions to tell us about her writing and publishing journey.

Football - Year 7 Girls Tournament The Year 7 girls had an excellent 5-a-side tournament at Testbourne this week, all showing their broad capabilities at both defensive and offensive play. Starting the tournament off with a 2-0 win over Danebury, 2 goals coming from a powerful right foot of Arabella. Game two saw a tie, with the team keeping Testbourne 1 at bay, with keeper Scarlett making some crucial saves.

Wellington was seen off with a 1-0 win, with a very late goal from Arabella. Harrow Way’s fourth game finished goalless against Testbourne’s second team. Again some key defending from Luna and a few crunching tackles from Maryam, both girls making contributions to the clean sheet. Our only loss came from a game with John Hanson first team, conceding just the one goal. Round six saw Jasmine play further up the pitch scoring two scorching goals from outside the box. The final game saw a 3-0 victory over John Hanson 2 with goals coming from Francis, Jasmine and Scarlett. After just conceding one goal throughout the tournament, Harrow Way finished in 3rd place. The player's player award goes to Arabella and Luna. The coach's player goes to Jasmine. Well done team!

Year 11 Football Our team put in a composed and disciplined performance to record a 5–0 win over John Hanson Year 10.
The match began evenly, with both sides working hard to gain control in midfield. As the game settled, Henry broke the deadlock with a calm finish following good build-up play. Harley Burt then added a second to give the team a two-goal lead at the break.
In the second half, Zach extended the advantage with a well-struck effort, before Stanley followed up to make it four. Emre completed the scoring late on after another well-worked move.
It was a strong all-round team effort, with credit due to the players for maintaining focus and showing good sportsmanship throughout. John Hanson continued to compete well until the final whistle, and the match was played in a positive spirit.
Final Score: John Hanson Year 10’s 0 - 5 Harrow Way Year 11’s. Goals: Jennings, Burt, Nicholls, Anoma, Yoruk.

Year 10 Netball
The Year 10 team had a resounding victory over Wellington on Wednesday.
Every element of the team’s play fitted perfectly into place; from slick centre passes to consistent shooting to defending that prevented the opposition from getting many shots off at all throughout the game.

With a 21-1 lead at half time, the team had an opportunity to try some new positions, with Hollie L entering into the world of the centre third for the first time as Wind Defence and Lucy O having a stint as Goal Shooter. The change didn’t slow them down much, ending the game with a final scoreline of 36-3.
Players of the match went to Dotty and Ishana. Rest of the team - Lucy P, Lucy O, Peyten, Erin, Hollie L, Isla.
Special mention to Izzy and Molly who had to miss the game due to a catering activity but came out to watch the second half.
Year 11 Netball - Harrow Way 28 - 7 Wellington Harrow Way delivered a commanding performance against Wellington, storming to an impressive 28–7 victory. From the first whistle, Harrow Way took control of the game, showcasing sharp passing, quick movement, and excellent teamwork across the court.
Wellington put up a feisty fight, showing determination and flashes of skill, but Harrow Way’s composure and discipline shone through. Adrianna and Lily showed rock solid defence intercepting passes and turning over possession with ease, while Bella and Freya were clinical under pressure, converting chances with confidence.
Throughout the match, Harrow Way maintained their focus and composure, refusing to be rattled by Wellington’s physical play. Every player contributed to the dominant display, ensuring the team’s control never slipped.
Brilliant work girls, well done! Player of the match went to Adrianna.

Primary School Sports This week, we were delighted to host a Badminton Skills Event for local Primary School children, and what a fantastic morning it was! A total of 40 enthusiastic pupils took part in a fun-filled round robin of badminton-themed activities designed to build confidence, coordination, and teamwork.
|
|
|
|
The children rotated around a variety of engaging stations, including balloon badminton, balancing challenges, relay races, and rally games. Each activity ensured every child could take part, have fun, and experience success.
Adding to the success of the event were our five brilliant sports leaders, who supported the activities with enthusiasm, encouragement, and care. Their energy and positivity helped make the morning run smoothly and ensured that every participant felt included and celebrated.
It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and growing skills throughout the session. The event was a true celebration of participation, teamwork, and the joy of sport!
