As our Head Boy said so eloquently in his speech at Open Evening last week, “this is our school - it belongs to us”. Students should have a say in how it is run and how we can make it even better. I am incredibly proud of student leadership at Harrow Way, which was also recognised in our recent Ofsted report.
Our Year Councils give two representatives from each tutor group the opportunity to share ideas and raise issues that matter to their year group. Our Student Council brings representatives together to consider how we can improve the experience of all our students.
Becoming a member is a real commitment. Students submitted letters of application to their Head of Year, explaining why they wanted the role. Following review by senior leaders, two representatives were selected from each year group, with our Year 11 Student Executive, the Head Prefects and Deputy Head Prefects, leading the Council.
We held our first meeting this week, and I was delighted to attend the start of the meeting to thank the new representatives for their effort and commitment. They already have plenty of ideas, and I look forward to working with them to turn these into positive changes.

Student leadership is also an opportunity to learn about democracy, representation and responsibility. Previous student council discussions have helped shape our school uniform and catering arrangements, demonstrating that students really can influence decisions that affect their daily lives.
We want every student to know that their voice matters, their ideas are valued and they can help shape the future of their school.
Military Covenant for Armed Forces Families We are proud to have joined local schools, colleges, military representatives and community organisations in signing the Education Covenant for Service Children at Andover College last week.
Coordinated by an Assistant Principal at the college, who is also one of our governors, the initiative brings partners together around a shared commitment: service life should never be a barrier to a young person’s education, wellbeing or future.
Armed Forces families may experience additional challenges, including separation during deployments, moving home and changing schools at short notice. The Covenant commits us to working together to provide greater consistency and support, particularly around transitions and pastoral wellbeing. Mrs Meek, our military champion, has already developed a comprehensive programme of support in school.
We are proud to be part of this collaborative work and remain committed to ensuring that every student feels valued, supported and able to fulfil their potential, whatever their circumstances.

Assembly To inspire people to be resilient in the face of adversity is a great skill. One example of this is Sir Winston Churchill, who led this country to victory in World War Two despite years of controversial politics and personal challenges. However, this is not a quality exclusive to the nobility, into which Churchill had been born. Sir Michael Caine, one of our greatest actors, now retired, was born to working class Cockneys in the Elephant and Castle, Southwark, London in 1933. Despite his poverty, the social stigma of his circumstances, and the elitism within the acting industry at the time, his integrity, self-belief, and resilience allowed him to achieve the success for which he is famous. Whether you relate more to Sir Winston Churchill or Sir Michael Caine, inspiring acts of resilience can be found everywhere, encouraging us all to push the trials and hardships of life, and achieve our own success. Mr Grace.

Good News: A Little More Shelter! There is more exciting work happening outside the classroom. With the change in weather, we are pleased to share that work has finally begun on our new covered outdoor seating area, which will give students a sheltered space to enjoy at break time, whatever the weather.
The project has been more than a year in the making, following queries from Sport England about the shelter’s position alongside our field. Planning permission was finally approved in late July, and we are delighted to see work now underway. The project is part of our ongoing commitment to providing better facilities for our children and creating a school environment, in which they can learn, thrive and feel that they belong.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE UPDATE
For Year 7 - the LRC and Library induction sessions are nearly complete so you may be asked by your son or daughter if they can access Reading Cloud or SORA from home using the free apps. Reading Cloud shows students which physical books are available (4,000+), shows them what is new, what is trending, displays their loan account, allows them to write book reviews, view reading lists and more.
SORA is the digital e- book platform so they can access audio books, comics, books and magazines on a device 24/7 free of charge. They can earn achievement badges for loans. Some Primary schools use SORA but your son or daughter will be able to access more titles now that they are in secondary school. The platform is run by Hampshire County Council's School Library Service who decide what is purchased and what is available to which age groups.
Most of Year 7 have had a chance to explore these useful software packages in the induction sessions but have been asked to spend a few minutes exploring them further as they are a valuable resource supporting both academic reading and for pleasure reading. They can be accessed from the school website if this is preferable to installing apps.

Football Year 11 - John Hanson 0 - 3 Harrow Way The start of the league season for Harrow Way got off to a flyer. The boys travelled to John Hanson and got their first win of the season. After a tight start to the game, the deadlock was broken after some great football, which led to Neyo Furtado taking on his man and smashing it into the bottom corner. John Hanson had chances, but the Harrow Way backline stood strong. In the second half, Harrow Way started to dominate the ball and dominate the chances. They doubled their lead early in the second half, after a great cross from Piotr Osuch found Alan Elzanowski in the middle who headed home. The game was sealed by an excellent solo goal from debutant Wisdom Tetteh, who took on a couple of John Hanson defenders and struck the ball into the bottom corner. Harrow Way closed the game out and managed to get their clean sheet. A great start to the season and lots to build on.
Year 11 - Harrow Way 0 - 3 Springfield (County Cup) Our Year 11’s had their second game in as many days when Springfield travelled to Harrow Way for the first round of the County Cup. The game was intense, with both teams desperate to make it into the next round. After a scrappy first half, the boys went in level at half time. Even in the first part of the second half, the game continued to be scrappy, with few chances being created. However, Springfield managed to break the deadlock and from that, grew confidence as the game went on. The visitors added a second, and with the last kick of the game rounded off the win with their third goal. A great effort from the boys, but full focus now goes into our league campaign.
Year 8 Harrow Way Y8 kicked off their season with a double header this week. After a campaign full of champagne last year, this start has been a campaign full of real pain. A humbling round of fixtures with a big negative goal difference has left the team chastened, out of the cup and behind their most local rivals. Congratulations to very strong Swanmore and John Hanson sides who have given our boys plenty to reflect on. Time to put in the hard work before taking to the field again!
Year 10/11 Girls Football A disappointing loss at Wyvern College for our 10/11 girls. They kept the game at a 0-0 deadlock for 20 mins before Wyvern went ahead. Ivy Jennings coming back a few minutes later with a fantastic long range shot dipping over the keeper and into the net.
Unfortunately, the opposition got the better of Harrow Way in the last 10 minutes with a flurry of goals. The second half Harrow Way stood strong and conceded only one goal throughout the half, despite Wyvern committing players forward. Unfortunately Harrow Way were unable to put any more past the net. The game finished 7-1 to Wyvern. Opposition awarded girl of the game to Abi Winterbone, and the coach's player goes to Ivy Jennings. A special mention to Amelia Wilson and Meli Newport.

You Asked, We Delivered! Our Wednesday after-school volleyball club has been a fantastic success, with a brilliant level of participation from our students. Some students have come along ready to play matches, while others are developing their skills and learning how to put them into practice in a game. It has been wonderful to see students supporting one another, building confidence and, most importantly, having fun. The atmosphere has been fantastic, so if you haven’t joined us yet, come along and give volleyball a go!

Netball 9B v Winton School We started slowly against Winton, with the score sitting at 1–0 at the end of the first quarter and 2–1 at half time. After that, we really started to come together as a team, making some important tactical decisions and big changes to our team combinations. The changes made a huge difference, and we finished the game strongly to secure a fantastic 9–3 victory. Brilliant teamwork, determination and effort from everyone! Our Opponent Player of the Match was Scarlett. Well done, team!
9A v Testbourne A A fantastic final quarter saw the A team pull away into a convincing victory after a tight start to the game.
The girls took a narrow lead at the end of the first ¼ that got pegged back and then slightly overtaken over the next two quarters. A swap round in attack going into the final 10 minutes gave Darcie the freedom to drive forward in the centre third to support play. Hollie in GD made a number of excellent interceptions, denying the opposition many opportunities to score. The team held strong and stayed confident and were rewarded with a 14-9 victory. Player of the Match - Riya. Coaches Player of the Match - Brooke.

Year 10 v TB 10B Testbourne kindly brought their B team to play a friendly against our 10’s on Wednesday. It gave us an opportunity to play new members and try existing ones in new positions. Ruby and Ruby dominated in the Goal Circle over the first two quarters, taking the team into a 9-1 half time lead.

A swap around gave usual GK Willow and WD Amie-Louise an opportunity to shoot. The team continued to dominate ending up with an excellent 19-3 win. Player of the Match: Erika & Ruby S. Coaches Player of the Match - Amie-Louise.

Changes in Family Circumstances
We understand that family circumstances can change and that even temporary changes at home can sometimes have an impact on a young person. If there is a significant change in your family circumstances — for example, a parent having an operation, illness, bereavement, separation or another change at home — please consider letting your child’s tutor know. You do not need to share more information than you are comfortable with, but making us aware allows staff to discreetly check in with your child, offer additional support where needed and better understand any changes we may notice in their behaviour, emotions or engagement at school.
Keeping Us Updated If you are going away and your child will be staying at home or being cared for by another family member or trusted adult, please let the school know. We ask that you provide the name and contact details of the adult responsible for your child while you are away. This ensures that, should an emergency arise, we have the correct information and can quickly contact the appropriate person. Thank you for helping us keep our records up to date and our students safe.
