Friday 3rd July 2026

Good Afternoon,

I don't think any of us will forget last week in a hurry! It began rather unexpectedly with what can only be described as a waterfall in my office, resulting in us having to switch off the school's water supply and, ultimately, send students home. It certainly wasn't the start to the week any of us had planned.

The challenges continued as temperatures climbed, requiring me to make some difficult decisions in the interests of the health and wellbeing of our students and staff.

Whilst those decisions were not taken lightly, I was incredibly grateful for the kindness, understanding and support shown by our parent community throughout the week.

Before the extreme heat arrived, it was an absolute pleasure to welcome back the Class of 2026 for their Prom on 19th June. As always, they looked incredible, from elegant dresses to dapper suits, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the excitement as they arrived in an impressive array of transport! It was a wonderful evening and a fitting way to celebrate the end of their journey with us.

One of the things I love most about our Prom is that it takes place here at school. There is something very special about celebrating such an important milestone in the place where so many memories have been made.

Our auditorium was transformed beyond recognition thanks to the creativity and dedication of Mrs Woodhead, our Head of Year 11 and her fantastic team. Every detail had been carefully considered, from the stunning decorations to the enormous rotating dice, expertly crafted by Mr Talbot, our talented DT technician. The photo booth, magician and casino all added to the fun, with students receiving their own "German Marks" to spend throughout the evening. It was very much a home-grown event, made even more special by our catering team, who produced a superb spread, and by the staff who gave up their evening to make it such a success. Particular thanks go to those behind the 'bar', serving wonderfully creative mocktails, and to everyone who helped create such a memorable atmosphere.

My enormous thanks go to every member of staff who made the evening possible. It was a wonderful celebration of a remarkable year group, and I know it is a night they will remember for many years to come.

This week's assembly, led by Mr Whitworth, focused on the importance of charitable giving and the difference that each of us can make within our communities. It was a timely reminder that generosity is not measured simply by the amount of money raised, but by the willingness to give our time, energy and compassion to help others.

This is something that sits very close to my heart, and it is an area in which our students continually make me proud.

Many of our young people volunteer and raise money for worthwhile causes outside school, whilst others have been inspired to become involved through our Personal Development curriculum. It is this commitment to service that has led to us being recognised as a Social Impact School, an achievement of which we are immensely proud.

As many of you know, a group of students will be travelling to Zanzibar in July 2027 with African Adventures. They have already begun the considerable task of fundraising, not only to support their own expedition but also to create opportunities for our partner school.

Last weekend, a team of students took part in running, cycling and walking challenges at Thruxton Circuit to raise additional funds, demonstrating remarkable commitment and teamwork.

One student deserves a particularly special mention. Monty has attended every Parent Consultation Evening this year, selling cakes (beautifully baked by his wonderfully supportive mum!) with unwavering enthusiasm. On 21st July, he also completed the London to Brighton Cycle Ride alongside his dad, certainly a Father's Day to remember! His determination and generosity were rightly recognised with a Headteacher's Commendation this week.

As we approach our own sponsored walk later this term, I want students to know that this is not about who raises the most money. It is about everyone choosing to play their part. Every step walked, every sponsor secured and every effort made contributes to something far bigger than ourselves. That sense of connection, care and shared purpose are some of the qualities that make our school community so special.

I wish you all an enjoyable weekend.
Mrs Dawn German

Assembly w/c 22 June - House
Last week's House assemblies were given over to the PE department as they launched the race for the 2026 Sports Day cup, currently held by Buzzard House. Mr Briggs (Curriculum Leader for PE) stressed the importance of taking part as every participant will win points for their House regardless of their finishing position. You've quite literally got to be 'in it to win it'. There was also the exciting news that our generous PTFA has donated 4 x £25 Amazon vouchers as prizes for attendance on Sports Day - all students who have taken part in the day will be entered into a prize draw to win the PTFA's kind gift.

Assembly w/c 29th June
This week’s assembly focused on the importance of charity and the difference we can make by supporting others in our community. We explored how acts of generosity can have a lasting impact, particularly during the most difficult times in people’s lives. We also introduced our upcoming sponsored walk, which will raise money for Simon Says, a charity that provides invaluable support to children and young people who are experiencing bereavement. By taking part, our school community has the opportunity to make a meaningful difference while demonstrating our shared values of compassion, kindness and service to others. Mr Whitworth

Year 7 & 8 Festival – Final Call!
Don’t miss out! Sign-up for the Year 7 and 8 Festival on Thursday 9th July is still open, but the deadline is fast approaching. Families who have not yet completed the Google Form must do so by Friday 3rd July. Please remember, payment via Scopay alone does not secure a place—students are only registered once both payment and the Google Form are completed. If you’ve paid but not filled in the form, please do this urgently so we know your child is attending. If your child does not wish to attend, this can also be indicated on the form to help us keep accurate records.

Good News Section

Monty Reid Year 9 completed the London to Brighton Ride recently and had this to say afterwards:

On Sunday the 21st of June 2026, I, alongside 14000 other cyclists took part in the London to Brighton cycle event, an annual event to raise lots of money for the British Heart Foundation. The event goes from Clapham Common in London, down to Brighton and Hove Beach Front. In total the course is 54 miles long, with 853 meters of elevation including cycling up for 1 mile over the South Downs to Ditchling Beacon before making our way down to the finish line on Brighton beach front. Overall, it took me and my dad 3hrs and 50 minutes to complete the route. In total, me and my dad raised £550 pounds for the BHF.

What an amazing achievement Monty, well done!

Zanzibar Thruxton Race Circuit Sponsored Walk
Staff and students (plus parents and grandparents) walked, cycled and ran around Thruxton Circuit on 28th June to raise money for our Zanzibar trip.

Sponsored Walk 2026 - Friday 10th July
It's that time of year again when 600 intrepid explorers from Years 7, 8 & 9 head out into the wilds of Andover to raise money for a good cause. Last year we walked for the Hampshire & Isle Of Wight Air Ambulance and in memory of our student and friend, Ryan. This year we are raising money for a charity that is very close to our hearts: Simon Says, a charity that offers childhood bereavement support.

We will also be raising funds for our very own PTFA and the school itself so every penny will make a huge difference. There will be lots of information going out to you all in the next week or so but for now please just put a note in your diary that reads, 'Sponsored Walk, buy plasters'.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE UPDATE

There has been a lot to promote this month. Pride Month, Refugee Week, World Music Day, the World Cup.  We use these events to encourage reading engagement across a variety of formats and to raise awareness.  We are now promoting National Crime Fiction Month - a popular genre here.

We continue to promote reading related to the World Cup. This week we have included a small Wimbledon display. The National Year of Reading marketing is ' If you're into it, read into it ' and National Literacy Trust research is showing there has been an uplift in reading among children and young people in the UK this year. Leveraging various types of reading opportunities related to their interests and to what is happening nationally and globally is part of our DNA in the LRC Library.

National Crime Fiction Month featured in June ( see photos below ) and we are now moving into promoting Summer Reading.

For Year 7 students joining us in September, the LRC and Library will be available from day one at break, lunch and after school and no card or thumbprint is required. We have a large collection of books purchased for this year group including Manga and Comic books as well as short reads and dyslexia friendly print titles. The catalogue can be viewed at  Reading Cloud where students can search for authors, titles and subjects, see what is new, receive recommendations and more. There is a free app too. We look forward to meeting them during an induction in September and supporting them in their vital reading journey.

SPORTING NEWS

Pre-Sports Day
In the lead up to Sports Day on Friday we have been running the High Jump and 1000m events after school. It has been great to kick off the biggest of the House events and the students have been working hard to earn those points.  Well done to all the students who have been involved this week!

Year 7 and 8 District Athletics
On Wednesday, the Year 7 and Year 8 athletics teams travelled to Charlton Athletics Track to compete in the Andover Schools Athletics Competition. The standard of competition was exceptionally high, with every event closely contested. Students gave outstanding performances, knowing that a first or second place finish in their event would secure a place on the Andover Schools team for next Tuesday's county competition.

The following athletes produced excellent performances and have earned their place on the Andover Schools team for the county round on Tuesday:

Faosiy Adeyefa 200m and 80m
Max Gyomrei Javelin
Bobby Walker 600m
Samuel Chewins 1000m
Zac Hodson Long Jump
Timy Ferencas High Jump
George Homer Shot Putt
Lottie Marante-Stokes 600m

Maryam Mumuni 600m
Mollie Wills 200m
Alicia Da Silva 1000m
Isabella Kneller 100m and 800m
Hollie Spears Javelin
Zac Watt 1500m and 800m
Luca Ivanscu Discus and Shot Putt
Mitchell Anoma 100m

Well done to all the athletes that took part.  Overall the Year 7 team finished 1st and the Year 8 team finished 2nd - impressive performances all round!

Year 8 Rounders Tournament
On Tuesday, Harrow Way hosted the Year 8 rounders tournament which took the form of a round-robin tournament against three local schools. The team demonstrated excellent teamwork, determination and resilience throughout the afternoon.

The tournament began with a challenging match against John Hanson. Despite a strong effort from the team and some consistent batting they were defeated 14–8. Abi was awarded a well deserved Fielder of the Game for her 3 catches in the second innings.

The second match against Testbourne proved to be an exciting and closely contested game. Our Year 8 team showed great composure under pressure, securing a fantastic 10.5–10 victory. Excellent batting, accurate fielding and determined teamwork helped the team edge a thrilling contest. In particular, Riya had an excellent game at 2nd best, gaining the Fielder of the game title

In their final game against Wellington, the team faced another strong opposition. Although they battled hard until the final round, restricting their total in the second innings, they were defeated 13–6. Hollie P really found her groove as 4th base as was awarded a well deserved Fielder of the game

The results meant the team finished third overall in the tournament. Throughout the afternoon, every player represented the school with enthusiasm, resilience and excellent sportsmanship. Their determination, teamwork and positive attitude were evident in every match, and they should be proud of their performances.

Icknield School Sports Day Leaders
Our sports leaders were treated to a pizza lunch with Mrs German on Thursday following their outstanding efforts to support at the Icknield school sports day.  The Head teacher of Icknield praised the young leaders for their adaptability and inclusion and said that they were exemplary citizens of Harrow Way.  A thoroughly deserved pizza lunch!

Water Safety

As the weather warms up, children and young people are more likely to be around water – whether at home, on days out or on holiday. Almost half of drownings occur during the summer months when temperatures are higher. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children in the UK, but most incidents are preventable. Babies and young children are most at risk at home, while older children and teenagers are more likely to encounter dangers in open water such as rivers, lakes and the sea. Research shows that teenagers and young adults are at increased risk during very warm weather, particularly when temperatures reach or exceed 25°C.

Most drowning incidents can be prevented with the right knowledge, supervision and preparation. The Hampshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (HSCP) Water Safety Toolkit for parents and carers offers simple, practical advice to help families stay safe.
