Friday 5th June 2026

Good Afternoon,

Welcome back to the final term of the academic year.

We have had a busy first week. Our additional modular building has now been fully installed and the new access pathways have been created. It is exciting to see everything beginning to take shape as we continue to invest in our facilities and provision for students.

I am also delighted to confirm that we are fully staffed with specialist teachers in every department. We have recruited a small number of additional teachers this term to strengthen our staffing position further and support the development of our new resourced provision. I look forward to introducing them to our community in September.

Whilst many of us were enjoying the half-term break, a group of students and staff embarked on an unforgettable Geography trip to Iceland. Their itinerary included some of the country's most famous landmarks, including the Blue Lagoon, Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall), Thingvellir National Park and the Strokkur Geysir.

The trip certainly required stamina and determination. Staff were particularly proud of the students who climbed a volcano and hiked to a glacier hidden behind a waterfall, no small achievement in the land of fire and ice. Alongside experiencing Iceland's unique landscapes, students were able to bring their classroom learning to life, applying their knowledge of coastal formations and physical geography in a real-world setting.

Over the half-term break, Mrs Gosden inspired us by donating her beautiful hair to Alopecia UK, a charity that is particularly close to her heart as her mother has been affected personally by the condition. In a touching moment, it was her mother who cut off Mrs Gosden’s long ponytail. As if that were not enough, this event also raised an incredible £716 for the charity. Her actions are a striking reminder that making a difference to others does not require grand gestures, just compassion, determination and a willingness to help where we can.

On Thursday this week, a group of Year 10 students took part in a “Speak Out Challenge” workshop, supported by the Southern University Network. This public speaking session helped students to develop and structure an effective speech, while building confidence, oracy skills and self-esteem. The experience also provides valuable preparation for their forthcoming speaking assessments, giving them a strong foundation in planning, rehearsing and delivering a talk in front of an audience.

At the end of the workshop, all students delivered their speeches to the group. Gemma Hellawell from the Speakers Trust, who led the session, praised their efforts, commenting: “I am impressed with how supportive you have been of each other; you are a credit to yourselves.” We were delighted to hear this.

Meanwhile, our Year 11 students have now reached the halfway point in their GCSE examinations. It is very much a marathon rather than a sprint. We continue to be impressed by their attendance at after-school revision sessions, their commitment to preparation and their exemplary conduct in the examination hall. Their positive attitude and resilience speak volumes, and they deserve every success for the effort they are putting in.

I wish you all an enjoyable weekend.
Mrs Dawn German

Assembly - Etiquette which has vanished from society; is society better?
This week’s assembly dealt with what etiquette is and how it is like oil on a hinge… it helps society run more smoothly. One student was able to identify why a picture of a man walking on the inside of a pavement with a woman on the outside is, or was, considered wrong.  Well done Malaki! The assembly also looked at karma (action) and how putting out good karma into society via manners and etiquette will eventually come back to you; however, the opposite is also true. Miss Priestman

Harrow Way's Got Talent
Tickets are now available to purchase for Harrow Way's Got Talent on Thursday 11th June at 6.30pm.

Parents of secondary age children in mainstream school and children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) can now apply for School Transport for the 2026/27 academic year. Applications for primary age children in mainstream school will open on 16 April.

Application deadlines
You can check whether your child or young person is eligible for transport on the School Transport webpages. If you believe they meet the criteria, and you need help getting them to school, you must apply on time to make sure your application is reviewed before September. The deadlines are:

  • For children attending mainstream primary and secondary schools - 31 May 2026
  • For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) - 30 June 2026

If your child already receives School Transport, you don't need to do anything unless your circumstances have changed. If you have moved home or school location, you will need to reapply for transport. Visit the website for full details including how to apply

GCSE Contingency Day 2026
The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) has set aside Wednesday 24th June as the GCSE Contingency Day 2026. This means that pupils need to be available up until this day to sit an examination even if their timetabled examinations finish sooner. The reason for this day "is to reschedule exams if a national incident or widespread disruption prevents them from taking place as planned, ensuring all students have a fair chance". If a pupil is unable to attend this date "they will be considered absent and will not receive a grade for that component". We therefore strongly advise that you do not make any plans to go on holiday until after this date.

Water Safety

As the weather warms up, children and young people are more likely to be around water – whether at home, on days out or on holiday. Almost half of drownings occur during the summer months when temperatures are higher. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children in the UK, but most incidents are preventable. Babies and young children are most at risk at home, while older children and teenagers are more likely to encounter dangers in open water such as rivers, lakes and the sea. Research shows that teenagers and young adults are at increased risk during very warm weather, particularly when temperatures reach or exceed 25°C.

Most drowning incidents can be prevented with the right knowledge, supervision and preparation. The Hampshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (HSCP) Water Safety Toolkit for parents and carers offers simple, practical advice to help families stay safe.
