Friday 20th June 2025

Good Afternoon,

On Monday, we said farewell to our Year 11 students with a Final Assembly that beautifully reflected their time at Harrow Way. This year group has truly embraced all that the school has to offer. Beyond their lessons and enrichment activities, they’ve formed lasting friendships and worked closely with staff who have always believed in them.

They’ve faced mocks, revision and final exams — and yes, the occasional questionable uniform choice! Through it all, they’ve grown into resilient, thoughtful, and courageous young people, and we couldn’t be prouder.

We also took time to remember Ryan, who will forever be a part of this year group and the wider Harrow Way family.

After the assembly, students gathered on the field for a final year group photo while the rest of the school lined the pathways in a touching guard of honour, cheering them on as they left the site — with a cheeky ice cream in hand. We are so proud of each and every one of them and wish them all the very best for their exciting life journeys ahead.

Also on Monday, a large group of Year 8 students set off for their Calshot activities week with Mrs Winnett and her team — and didn’t they pick the perfect weather for it! The sunshine has made for ideal conditions as students enjoy a packed programme including sea-based activities, climbing, archery, dry slope skiing and the zipwire, to name just a few. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures on their return.

Wednesday marked National Thank a Teacher Day, and we were delighted to receive a wave of uplifting messages from students and parents. These heartfelt notes mean the world to us and are a powerful reminder that our staff’s dedication, passion and hard work do not go unnoticed.

I can’t share every message, but this one captures the spirit perfectly:

“We see how you show up every day for our kids. Thank you so much for the love and care — we appreciate you and love you more. Thank you to all our amazing teachers and headteacher at Harrow Way Community School.”

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

I wish you all an enjoyable — if rather warm — weekend,
Mrs Dawn German

Assemblies This Week
House Assemblies - On Your Marks... Set... Go!
This week's House Assemblies were focussed on getting our hands on the Sports Day Cup! On Friday 11th July all students in Years 7, 8, 9 & 10 will be taking part in our biggest ever Sports Day -  more events, more Houses & more points to play for! This year we have added to classic events such as tug-of-war and the 80 metre hurdles with new inclusive events so that even our injured students can compete. Alongside our 'new age kurling' we have introduced an international flavour with Pétanque, a variant of boules played in southern France and the Catalan region of Spain. With Kite House entering their first ever sports day and new events in the mix, the winner of Sports Day will be even harder to predict. What we do know is that students will need their full HWCS PE kit, plenty of water and a competitive spirit to bring home the cup.

Thank you to the PTFA for the funding to buy more inclusive sports equipment allowing us to fully involve all students in Sports Day.

Staying Hydrated in the Warm Weather
With the recent warm weather, we kindly ask all students to bring a reusable water bottle to school each day. Bottles can be refilled during break and lunchtime using the available water stations. Staying hydrated is especially important during hot weather to support focus, wellbeing, and overall health. Thank you for your support.

Tuesday 1st July 2025 - Hot Meal Order
On Tuesday 1st July,  the canteen in the Auditorium is closed to current students as we welcome our Year 6 children for their Induction Day. As a result, if students would like a hot main meal on that day, they must pre-order it using this form.

Snacks and other food items will still be available from the pods at break and lunchtime as normal, only hot main meals will be available by pre-order. All pre-ordered main meals can be collected from the hatches outside the auditorium at lunchtime.

Please ensure the form is completed by Wednesday 25th June 2025.

Students may also choose to bring a packed lunch or purchase snacks from the pods.

Payment will be taken from students’ SCOPAY accounts as usual, or covered by FSM allocations where applicable.

Relaxed Uniform Day in Aid of “Simon Says”

27th June 2025
As you may be aware, we have become a Simon Says champions school.  “Simon Says” is a charity that supports young people in the local area to cope with bereavement.  As part of our work as a champion school, we make a commitment to raise money to support the charity. On Friday 27th June, we will have a relaxed uniform day where students can wear trainers, a hoodie and no tie. If your child wants to participate in this please send them to school with £1 on the day.

Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme

Hampshire County Council is inviting families with children in receipt of free school meals to apply for a voucher for Andover Leisure Centre. This voucher provides:

Year 11 Notices

Year 11 Exam Results Day – Thursday 21st August 2025
We will be distributing Year 11 exam result slips on Thursday 21st August, between 10:00am and 12:00 midday, in the auditorium.

The Maths Department would be very grateful if any Year 11 students are willing to donate their scientific calculator in exchange for a bar of chocolate on results day! While some of you may need your calculator for Further Maths or A-levels, many will no longer have much use for it.

Donating your calculator to the school on results day helps future students – and you get chocolate in return, which is surely more fun! Thank you in advance for your generosity and see you on results day!

Request for Pre-Loved Year 11 Uniform
As your child is ending their Harrow Way journey, the PTFA would like to wish them the best of luck in everything they do. We would like to thank you, the parents, for your support towards the PTFA over the last few years.

We are kindly requesting, if it is possible, that you consider donating pre-loved uniform and PE kit to the thrift shop. We have found the thrift shop to be increasingly popular and our supplies are low. Ideally we would like: blazers, skirts, ties and PE kits.

To donate, simply drop in uniform at reception (don’t worry about washing or missing buttons etc. we will take care of that). Alternatively, your child can drop the uniform directly into Mrs Bain’s room B004. The PTFA are also planning to have ‘drop-zones’ after the students’ last exams.

Thank you for your support with this. HWPTFA

Year 11 - Important Prom Evening Travel Information
We are very much looking forward to welcoming our Year 11 students to the upcoming Prom Evening — a special occasion to celebrate the end of the academic year.

Please be aware that Portway School will also be hosting its Summer Fête on the same evening, which is likely to attract a high number of visitors. As a result, traffic along Upper Drove is expected to be particularly heavy.

To help ensure a smooth and enjoyable arrival for all prom attendees, we kindly ask that transport to the prom avoids Upper Drove where possible. We encourage you to consider alternative routes or drop-off points to help ease congestion in the area.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping the evening run safely and smoothly.

Ways Forward

Ways Forward - our weekly newsletter for Careers, Apprenticeship, College, Work and Work Experience.

Year 10 will soon be out on work experience and we include some important things to consider before they start their placements.

Also this week in Ways Forward, find out more about a career as a midwife, a solicitor degree apprenticeship,  careers at British Airways, careers in TV and broadcasting, and careers in the British Army.

Our Labour Market Information spotlight focuses on a 'Green Jobs for Nature' webinar which is aimed at parents and carers; their young people are welcome to attend too.

For any year 11 students still looking for apprenticeships, new local apprenticeship vacancies include opportunities in childcare, as a laboratory technician, a builders merchant apprentice, and an administration apprenticeship based at Andover War Memorial Hospital.  There's also a webinar aimed at Year 11 with useful information to help you find an apprenticeship.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE UPDATE

From September, the LRC will be receiving copies of First News newspapers to enable students to read news stories in an accessible way in order to read for purpose and to read for intent. Some of the articles will be used in our Reading For Success Programme. First News has made some resources available to families free of charge during the summer holidays and here is the link.

Students aged 14+ can join Andover Public Library as Summer Reading Challenge volunteers - an opportunity to help Primary age children through their reading challenges in July and August. Great work experience! See the posters in school or pop into the Chantry Centre Library for more information.

Refugee Week has been promoted this week with books and a student voice activity.

I attended the International Reading Conference virtually last week to learn about developments in the science of reading, current research, as well as new products and resources. Time well spent and lots to ponder!   Events like this remind me how much the LRC already does in this important area but it's great to get some new ideas too.
