Kieran strikes gold in maths challenge

HARROW Way’s gifted and talented Year 7 and 8 students are celebrating their successes at a national mathematics competition.

Overall 11 students qualified for the bronze certificate and five qualified for the silver certificate in the UK Maths Challenge (UKMC).

Kieran Tribe, in Year 8, achieved not only the highest score in the school, but also achieved an elusive gold.
More than 240,000 students from across the UK sat the Junior Maths Challenge with only the top six per cent receiving a gold certificate.

Kieran said: “I’ve always enjoyed maths and, although the challenge paper was a slightly different type of maths than I am used to, I still didn’t find it too difficult. The teachers here at school regularly give me extra challenging work so I continue to improve. I definitely see maths and ICT as part of my future – I plan to study the subjects at college once I leave school and will hopefully one day have a career which relates to these subject areas.”

Harrow Way maths teacher Shelley Frape said: “This is a different and fun way of stretching our more able students and asking them to use their skills of reasoning and logic in order to achieve their best.

“They enjoy a challenge and we are very pleased with their performance, which is indicative of the high standard of teaching and learning delivered here at Harrow Way.”

The challenge is org anised by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) and is aimed at students in Years 7 and 8.

Entrants have to answer 25 multiple choice questions within one hour, under normal exam conditions.

The UKMT’s aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics.

It organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11- to 18-year-old UK school pupils.

Harrow Way’s gifted and talented programme is open to all high-achieving learners with a view to maximising their potential.
