Harrow Way played host to the Group 5 final of the annual Rotary Club Youth Speaks Competition. Hosted by Andover Rotary Club, the event saw intermediate and senior teams from schools from Hampshire and Wiltshire compete to go through to the next round. Harrow Way had a team competing in the senior round.
The evening started with the intermediate section, which consisted of four teams. First to articulate was Stonehenge School, who spoke about animal cloning and how it could be used in medical research and benefit future races. Romsey School spoke next on ‘The changing face of friendship’ and how personal friends matter more than cyber friends. Godolphin School wants to encourage everyone over seventy to relocate to the Isle of Wight. Their reasoning behind this was to keep them all safe from crime, and allow them to be looked after in a peaceful community. Finally John Hanson School asked the question: ‘who really wears the trousers in families today?’ They addressed each family member’s role and came to the conclusion that when the new puppy arrives it takes charge.
The second part of the evening saw three senior teams take to the floor. Romsey School discussed the history and passions of dance and tried to encourage everyone to ‘Get Dancing!’ Bishops Wordsworth School were disappointed in the lack of a genuine expression of love. They thought that the screen had replaced paper and the keyboard has replaced the pen. To end the speaks, Harrow Way described ‘a day in the life of a GCSE student’. How many pressures of getting good grades in their GCSEs hinders their personal life and takes up all of their free time.
