Friday 22nd September 2017

Good afternoon,

We were really pleased to welcome so many Year 11 parents at the Information Evening on Monday. The Presentation slides for the evening can be found here and those parents unable to attend will receive the information via their child.

Keeping standards high
Students have made a great first impression in the first two weeks of the school year. They all listened carefully to the first assemblies of the year where we reminded them of our values and expectations, how to look after themselves and others and what our basic safety expectations are. If they (or you) have any questions about school rules or expectations please contact their tutor in the first instance.

As has been the case for a number of years now, if a student loses focus in a lesson and this causes disruption to other students' learning, we have a clear procedure in place for dealing with this. All students know and understand this and respond really positively. When we talk to students and ask for feedback, they consistently tell us this helps to keep a great learning atmosphere and ethos in classes.

Assemblies
Assemblies this week were taken by Year Leaders who have asked for student applications to join the School Council. Students were also given a refresher on our Anti-bullying Charter and who to speak to in school to report any unkindness. You can read our Anti-bullying Charter here.

Communication reminder
I would just like to remind you of the different ways you can keep in regular contact with us:

  • Weekly ENews

Year 7 settling in meeting arrangements
Year 7 parents should have received an e-mail giving details on how to sign in and use the the Parents Evening Booking website, to make a 5 minute appointment with their child's Tutor to discuss settling in.

School photographer
Year 7, Year 10 and new students have had photographs taken this week. Proof copies will be given to your child next week. As usual, there will be a very short deadline to order copies.

Curriculum
You can view our curriculum content on our website here and link to each Department's content.

Open Evening - 26th September
We will be holding our Open Evening at 6.30 pm on Tuesday 26th September. This event is primarily for Year 6 pupils and their parents. Unless current students have been asked to assist during the evening, they should not attend. In order to prepare for this event we will be closing the school to students at 12.45pm and have requested buses for this time.

Operation Encompass
Operation Encompass

Harrow Way has been given the opportunity to take part in a project that will run jointly with Hampshire Constabulary. This initiative is called Operation Encompass.

The aim of this initiative is for the police to share information with the school, in a more timely manner, when a child or young person has been exposed to or involved in an incident of Domestic Abuse. This information is already being shared with school but there are often delays. This new initiative improves the speed of the information sharing to the school to allow early support to be put in place for a child when it may be needed the most. This will support the long term wellbeing of children affected by domestic abuse.

The information shared will be received by the Designated Safeguarding lead in school, who is appropriately trained to manage this information. All information is treated in confidence in the same manner as all safeguarding information. If you would like to know more about Operation Encompass please visit: www.operationencompass.org
