Friday 6th October 2017

Good afternoon,

During this week I have had a number of additional parent tours for families who could not get to the open events. This year, our Open Evening was an absolute record breaker, with the numbers of Year 6 pupils and their families that we had through the door, with the number of primary schools represented on the evening/open mornings, and with regard to the number of students who wanted to help out in showing off our School and all we do here. I was so proud on the evening to be able to highlight all that Harrow Way offers, and I was also so proud of the staff and students who showed the passion and commitment to learning and aspiration that is alive here.

Year 7 Settling in Evening
Thank you to all Year 7 parents who attended this important meeting. I hope you found it a useful part of the transition process. We are really pleased how Year 7 students have settled in, they have been amazing and a fantastic addition to the Harrow Way family . I must say, I have been very pleased with the attitude to learning that we have seen from the year group so far and impressed with the way so many of them have embraced the opportunities on offer.

Year 11 Revision Arrangements
In assemblies Miss Walker has pointed out that staggering the revision and study over the year makes so much more sense, particularly for achieving a grade 5 or above in all subjects, and that very little was ever really gained by braving it out to see how well one can perform with no revision at all; a very popular tactic with some previous groups of Year 11's. Having said all of that, I am again, as with the Year 7s, impressed with the general attitude to learning with which Year 11 have returned. Next week, Year 11 start the first of their exams in Business Studies.

This term, Year 11 students are strongly advised to attend after school revision sessions for the core subjects as follows:
Tuesdays - Science
Wednesday - Mathematics
Thursday - English

Year 11 parents will be advised as revision sessions for other subjects become available.

Assemblies
Harrow Way Students celebrated Black History month in an assembly created by Tutor teams. 7KG debated whether we should celebrate Black History month, 8GMO talked about inspirational Black people and 9EM discussed their Black British Heroes and challenged us to discover our own Black British Hero. Year 10 looked at the statistics around hate crimes, employment and poverty.

Educational Visits
Art students visited Hilliers Arboretum this week to gain visual information through drawing and photography. Football enthusiasts went to watch the Chelsea Ladies play in a Champions League match. Last Thursday and Friday our Year 11 GCSE Geography students visited Swanage to collect environmental data as part of their curriculum.

All Year 10 students will be attending a Careers event next week at John Hanson during the school day. Letters have been given to students in assembly this morning, which can also be viewed here.

Performing Arts Update
This term we have our Winter Music Concert planned for 7th December. On 13 & 14th December, Year 11 will be performing a piece entitled Shakespeare's Women, a selection of scenes featuring iconic female Shakespearean characters.

Preparations for the March performances of the School Musical "School of Rock" are well under way, with auditions and casting completed. The musical has a cast of 80 (including Drama Club and Icknield students) plus a student band and show choir. There will be over 100 students involved in total; I'm really looking forward to Show Week!

Arrangements for Homework Club
Homework Club is available daily to students from 3.15 pm to 4.15 pm in the Library Students are expected to work quietly during this time

Governor Vacancy
We currently have a vacancy for a Co-Opted Governor. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real contribution to our very successful and rapidly growing school community. We are looking for someone with the commitment to improving education for all students and to the school's vision and ethos. A good start to the year with Harrow Way winning 5-3 against Winton Academy. It was end to end football with some exciting attacking play. George Bartlett, Taylor Carnegie and Callum Evans all scored with Lewis Rodham scoring two. Man of the match Lewis Rodham.
