Student Shadow General Election
As the country hits the polling stations on Thursday, students were also casting their vote to make an informed choice on which political party they would like to see in power. This is the third time the students have been invited to put their 'x' in the box having previously voted in the 2015 General Election and last year's EU referendum. The results are in and it's a Labour landslide with a large majority.
In the build-up to polling day we delivered special assemblies to introduce the various political parties, their leaders and what they stand for. Students were challenged to think about the issues which matter to them and to discuss with friends, families and teachers. During tutor time and special assemblies students were encouraged to think for themselves.
At Harrow Way we passionately believe in political literacy and feel that it is our duty to enable students to be great citizens. The school is buzzing with talk of the election and the students are really keen to learn more about politics. More importantly they have been really enthusiastic about having their own say and I hope that when they all reach the voting age they continue to take part in the democratic process.
The final results of our election were much more decisive than the actual election!
Labour won with a 45% majority followed by the Conservatives (25%), Green Party (14%), UKIP (11%) and Lib Dems (5%). We are very proud of your young citizens and they way that they have fully engaged with the debate.
Athletics Success
Just before half-term our Year 9 and 10 Athletes took part in the District Competition. We came 2nd in both year group competitions and many have qualified for the County competition later this term. Please see the website for the full write-up.
Year 7 and 8 rounders teams were in action this week against the Clere. Our Year 7 team played well but lost; our Year 8 team were able to gain a victory in their match. Congratulations to both teams and players' player Alanah Machin and Alicia Lund respectively.
Assembly
We observed the 1 minute silence for victims of London terrorist attack on Tuesday. In this week's assemblies we explored the theme of Inclusion and Diversity and an understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. We also looked at how unfortunately with the attacks in Manchester and London, a small minority will try and ruin this positive relationship between different people and how they falsely use religion or their political beliefs as an excuse to use violence and terror on innocent people. The assembly presentation can be viewed here.
Year 8 University of Winchester Taster Day
Year 8 Students had a taste of Higher Education this week and visited the University of Winchester. Students took part in a tour and even looked at the available accommodation. Students took part in a number of workshops including creative writing, criminology and Sports Science. The students really enjoyed their day and were an absolute credit to the school.
Rewards
We are planning on running a rewards morning visit to Andover Odeon Cinema on the 21st of July for students from all Year Groups that have displayed excellent behaviour and attendance through the school year. Invitations will be issued by Heads of Year and to cover costs, a donation of £2.75 per student would need to be made.
Year 11
Year 11 students have had a challenging week with a pretty full schedule for many, including Geography, History, Science and Computer Science and the whole cohort exams of English Language and Maths. We hope Year 11 have used half term to gather their collective breath, take stock and re-energise.
Years 7-8
Years 7-10 will also have the opportunity to practice their exam technique soon. End of term exams start on Monday 19th June. Students have already had a study skills session and parents have been sent links to the material and also the exam timetable for their child. These are available to view on the Letters Home Page under the 'May' heading.
The boys toilets in the English block are now open. They look very smart and we hope the students appreciate the time and money spent on this renovation. We have also updated our signage in and around the school Many thanks to the students who allowed us to use their images.
