Friday 8th June 2018

Good afternoon,

Welcome to our new intake, who are receiving their first eNEWS edition today. We will be welcoming 190 students to Harrow Way next year and currently have a waiting list of 50! We are currently the most heavily oversubscribed school in the Test Valley area. I am delighted that Harrow Way continues to be the first choice for families in our area.

Year 11 students have all worked so hard and the end is in sight – I do think that the students in Year 11 are in a pretty good place right now and should be confident of reaping the rewards of their considerable efforts. A quote from one of them when I asked how an exam went yesterday... 'Good Sir... I think I nailed it... certainly nothing rogue in it.' He smiled. I really smiled.

One of the many things that makes Harrow Way such a great place to be is the dedication of my colleagues in supporting Year 11 (and all students), who go above and beyond on so many occasions and in a multitude of ways. They give up their time willingly because they see the difference it makes to our young people.

I enjoyed watching our home Rounders fixtures this week - a full report follows below. I also attended the H-Factor, our house singing competition, last evening. Well done to all those students who took part in the competition. Audience vote went to Elliott Vallance; runner up went to Eray Tozer; and the overall judges winner was Lani Clayton.

In our Ofsted report last year, I was particularly pleased Ofsted made reference to the high quality teaching and support staff at Harrow Way. I am delighted to say we have very few staff leaving us at the end of the year and are fully staffed having made some excellent appointments over the year. I am looking forward to starting the 2018-19 academic year with another exceptionally strong team.

Teacher Development Trust – Silver Award
I am delighted to inform you that Harrow Way Community School's commitment to the highest standards in teaching and learning has been recognised by the Teacher Development Trust Network (TDTN). Receiving high praise from the auditors we have been awarded their prestigious Silver Award.

Commenting on their recent visit to the school where auditors interviewed teaching and support staff they said: "Thank you for a very engaging and enjoyable visit to Harrow Way Community School. I was heartened to see a strong commitment to professional learning supported by senior leaders who are proactive in modelling CPD and understand that professional development is on-going for teachers of all experiences. It was a pleasure to talk to staff about their own professional learning."

Assembly - Inclusion
This week's assembly had the theme of Inclusion – Why do we need to include everyone? We considered this in light of the UNHRC Article 2. The Convention applies to every child whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, abilities, whatever they think or say, no matter what type of family they come from.

We looked how the local community came together at The Grenfell Tower fire which occurred on 14 June 2017 at the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in West London. It caused an estimated 71 deaths. We also looked at the single best case for how to advertise intangible value - simply through affecting people's perceptions. The story of Shreddies is the ideal case study for demonstrating the possibility of creating intangible added value for a brand without modifying the product at all. There was even a "Combo Pack" that supposedly contained both versions.

End of Year Exams - Years 7-10
Students have this week been given their timetable for the end of year internal exams which are running across two weeks starting on Monday 18th June. It is an important part of preparing for the final examinations in year 11 to prepare and practice exam style assessment throughout their time at school. Students should speak to their tutors and class teachers to get support regarding the content of the exams and how best to prepare. Students should be doing some revision each night in the build up to examinations.

Year 10
A reminder that Year 10 will be on Work Experience for the week beginning 9th July. The whole year group will be attending a College Taster Day at Andover College on Wednesday 4th July. There are further taster days available for BCOT and Sparsholt, if your child would be interested in these, they need to speak to Mr Peebles as spaces are limited.

Winning Week in Rounders
The Year 10 team played two games this week, and very victorious in both. On Tuesday the girls beat Rookwood in a closely fought game, 12 1/2 rounders to 11. Batter of the game went to Indy Jones, fielder of the game was bowler Grace Farrelly. On Wednesday they played Winton, winning 25 1/2 rounders to 13 1/2. Players of the match were Amelia Kalwajtys and Indy Jones.

The Year 7's beat The Clere with a score of 13 1/2 rounders to 6 1/2. Batter of the match was Faith Holman, fielder of the match, Kiera Inman.

Cricket Fixtures
Harrow Way boys' U15 cricket teams were in action this week and although good performances were put in against Costello, Kings and Oaklands schools, the matches were lost. A full report of all the matches can be read on the website.

Visit to Boulogne
A large group of Year 7 students are experiencing the city of Boulogne today, hopefully being brave enough to use their French to talk to locals. Some updates of their trip can be viewed on our Twitter feed.

Library Volunteer
Andover Library Volunteering

Mandy Warner from Hampshire Library Service spoke to years 9 and 10 recently about an exciting opportunity to volunteer at Andover Library during the summer, supporting 4 to 11 year olds in the national summer reading challenge.

This kind of experience is welcomed on prefect, college and job applications as well as on personal statements for college and university. One of our ex-students who took part now has a paid weekend role so the benefits of taking part are there to see! More information is available from our school library and from the Reading Agency's Reading Hacks website.
