Friday 8th December 2017

Good afternoon,

Christmas is creeping into the school this week, with the Winter Concerts and Christmas Fair. Today we hosted the Andover and Area Heads meeting. The meetings rotate around the schools and we take an opportunity to discuss best practice in the host school. Today that was Harrow Way!

The basic premise for the group is to:

  • Encourage and facilitate schools to work together to raise standards
  • Address common, local problems and manage local issues jointly
  • Promote educational inclusion
  • Share best practice across the group of schools
  • Provide a forum that allows discussion regarding current educational legislation and policy
I always enjoy working closely with the Andover schools.

Youth Generated Sexual Imagery (YGSI)
You may remember that last week in assemblies we concentrated on Youth Generated Sexual Imagery (YGSI). Coincidentally, all Hampshire Schools have been contacted by Hampshire Constabulary via the Local Authority Safeguarding Team to alert staff, parents and students to a recent incident in the county. We have been asked to share information with students, which we have done, and with parents, which we are doing via this e-news. You can read the letter from this link.

Assemblies
Tutor Groups delivered assemblies all about the Suffragettes. Some students took part in role play, others delivered information in a mini-history lesson and some debated whether 16 year olds should be allowed to vote.

Tutor Standstill
Students took the opportunity to explore the foundation of UNICEF and the journey that it started after WWII to champion the Rights of the Child and which continues to the present day. Our school is proud to be part of that journey and students explored and discussed the different articles that make up the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Christmas Fair
Thank you for all your assistance with the Christmas Fair. Students and staff will be busy setting up at the end of the day for what looks to be a fun event. Any profit from the Christmas Fair will be given to our School Charity, Partner West Africa as part of our commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Winter Concert
Our thanks to Mr Pollard for organising a wonderful Winter Concert yesterday. This year our soloists, guitarists, Show Choir and Cast and Band from next year's musical "School of Rock" were joined by special guests, the Primary School Choir. Images can be viewed on our Twitter Feed.

Sporting Fixtures
We put out a strong team for the Years 7 and 8 Girls Cross Country event at Winton on Tuesday this week and were pleased to have 8 students selected for the next stage.

Christmas Dinner
We have offered a Christmas Dinner to our students and 200 have booked a lunch on Friday next week. We will of course be offering other meal options to students, although this will be more limited than usual.

Planned School Trips for 2017/18

These visits for 2017/18 have currently been agreed by the Headteacher. Others will be added throughout the year. There is no guarantee that they will all go ahead as this depends on student uptake. Further details on each visit will be given out to the year group/classes involved by the member of staff organising the visit.

Uniform

Labelling items of school uniform is very important - especially PE Kit. We return named items that are found. Even the best laundry pens fade over time, so please check your child's uniform regularly. We do have unnamed kit in Lost Property.
