Friday 3rd November 2017

Good afternoon,

Good afternoon - I hope you have all had a good half term break. Last half term was a busy one and we have a lot to look forward to this half term!

Assemblies
Miss Lowing talked about the stereotypes around boys and girls that start before babies are even born! Students were asked to think about whether limitations are being put on them by others or whether they are limiting themselves because of their gender.

Year 11 Mock Examinations
The Year 11 mock exams for English and Maths take place during the week of 13th November. Please follow this link for the full timetable. In order to give students and staff a clear idea of where focus and support may be needed it is important that students revise fully for these exams alongside the preparation that students will be doing in class.

It is important that students remind themselves of the topics that they have been studying in Maths up to this point and focus on the poetry anthology and the play 'Othello' for English.

Volunteering
Do you or your relatives have any spare time to support our Year 11 students in examinations? A number of our students are entitled to "Access Arrangements" such as extra time to complete exams or someone to scribe for them in order to maximise their chances of achieving their potential. If you would be willing and available to support students in their mock or main exams, please contact Mrs German at school. All training will be provided.

Year 11 Tassomai
I hope by now your son or daughter will have shown you the letter about the use of Tassomai, a revision App, for science revision. All year 11 students have been signed up to the website and are using it as part of a month's free trial.

If the students complete 80% of the course Tassomai guarantee the student will achieve a grade C or higher (now a 5), and if they complete 100% they are likely to get an A or A* (now a 7-9). If you have not yet decided whether to purchase access for the whole year or not, please can I ask you watch this clip where Tassomai was featured on the Sky News Technology Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubMHjaxaJHY

The deadline for making the payment of £24 is next Friday 10th November. The preferred method is via our online payment system, where debit and credit cards may be used. We do not need you to return this slip if you pay online. Alternatively, to pay by cheque, please return the reply slip from the letter and payment a.s.a.p. to the white post box by Student Reception. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Miss K Jameson.

Educational Visits
Mr Carter was very impressed with the football team on their Barcelona tour over the half-term holiday; the team won 2 games and drew 2, a great outcome. They were also great ambassadors for the school and a credit to themselves and their families. Well done!

Whole School Photograph
Your child should have brought home an envelope with a proof and ordering details. Please return this to school by Monday 6th November. Late orders will incur an additional £5 postage charge. There is an opportunity to look at the photo on-line: http://www.tempest-groups.co.uk/item/43172 using the password HA2125 but orders must be on a paper form.

Interested in Teaching
Harrow Way are hosting a SCITT Taster Day on Thursday 16th November 2017, for those thinking about joining the teaching profession. This is a chance to tour our school, view teachers in lessons and ask any questions you may have. For more information see this flyer. Harrow Way is part of the Hampshire LEARN SCITT Partnership.

Hampshire Book Awards
Our year 9 Hampshire Book Awards judges went to the Winchester Guildhall yesterday to meet the winning author, Helen Dennis. Hampshire secondary school students read 6 short-listed books in the summer term and traveled to a county wide voting day in July to debate the merits of each title and vote for a winner. Helen was a warm and witty speaker who entertained and inspired the hundreds of adults and students present with her recount of how she started writing at 7 years old in the garden shed. Our students were able to purchase a signed copy of one of her books and be photographed with her. Involvement in this award supports our commitment to engaging students in reading for pleasure which has been proven to improve literacy. A picture can be seen on our Twitterfeed.

Autumn Progress Reports
This week sees the first data collection for students across the school, it is the first opportunity in the academic year for us to review the progress and effort and attitude of students in all subjects. This information will then be coming home over the next few weeks as a full report for year 11 and a progress review (a short report) for all other year groups. The reports are best read in conjunction with the information contain in the booklet "A new way to Assess Your Child's Progress at Harrow Way Community School." A copy of the booklet can be found here.

Uniform
Thank you for your support with uniform last half term as standards of uniform were excellent with only a few individual student uniform issues. Now that the weather has become colder pupils are starting to wearing outdoor coats. These coats need to be worn over their blazers and no hoodies are allowed to be worn under student blazers.

National Championships
You may not be aware that our Deputy Headteacher Mrs Pearce is a keen horsewoman and competes in the very difficult discipline of dressage. We are really pleased to report that Mrs Pearce and her horse Keystone Quartz competed in dressage at the Area Festival Final held at Bicton Arena on 21-22nd October. The partnership finished 2nd qualifying them for the National Championships to be held at Hartpury in April 2018. Congratulations Mrs Pearce!
