The PE Department have enjoyed a very successful week. Despite a very cold evening, the Year 9 Girls Football Team won through to the County Cup Semi-Finals. Well done! Best players being Lucy Ladd and Morgan Durrans. Congratulations as well to the Year 7 & 8 Basketball team, who won the 3 v 3 district basketball tournament on 24th January. The Years 7 and 8 netball season has also started, with their first matches against the Clere this week. Year 7 won 15-2 - Emily Phillips Strudwick was voted best player and Year lost 8-2 with our best player being Traci Henry.
NSPCC Number Day - Non-uniform
Thank you for your support for this charity - we will be making a donation of £758 to the NSPCC. Today's NSPCC Number day was very successful - we joined thousands of schools for a maths-inspired fundraising day and raising money for the NSPCC. All the money raised goes towards the fight for every childhood. Students were given the opportunity to reflect on the work of the NSPCC during tutor time, and were shown this video: NSPCC Every Child. Year 7 students were treated to a game of Kahoot in the afternoon, see our twitter feed here.
Assemblies
This week Heads of House have been holding assemblies. This term's House Assemblies were linked to the UN Convention on the Right of the Child - specifically Article 2 which states, 'The Convention applies to every child without discrimination, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, language or abilities.'
We celebrated Harrow Way's efforts to spread opportunities to less fortunate children through our fundraising. The Christmas Fair and bake sales from our Bake Off competition raised over £1300 for our school charity, Partner West Africa. A letter from one of the charity's founders thanked us and said that the money would make 'a significant difference to the lives of the children we work with in Ghana'.
This coming term sees the return of the Photography competition. The theme? The Secret Life of Toys. Another great opportunity to showcase how creative our students can be.
Prefect Process
We are very excited to be starting our prefect application process this week. We will be looking for Year 10 students who have shown outstanding commitment to the school to become our student leaders. This year, students are being invited to apply to the role of prefect; we are only inviting students who have exemplary attendance, have 1 or less Behaviour points and have been approved by staff as suitable. The Year 10 students have had an assembly today to go through the process and have been able to see who is eligible to apply to the position of prefects. The invited students are being asked to write a letter of application which is due in on Wednesday 21st Feb. These will then be viewed by the Year 10 team and prefects will be selected. Selection of senior prefect roles will be via a formal interview process. We will be allowing a second tranche of applications in the summer term.
Musical Change of Date
The public performances of this year's musical School of Rock have been put back to the week commencing 21st May. Public Performances will be on Wednesday 23rd, Thursday 24th and Friday 25th May, starting at 7.00 pm.
Year 11 Mocks
Students are making the most of this opportunity for exam practice. The first week has gone well. This link to the timetable will help you and your child plan their revision work. Next week's schedule is quite hectic - although we try and plan in late break times for students, due to the length of the exam on Wednesday there will not be an opportunity for them to buy food at breaktime and they should bring in their own snack. Food will be available on Wednesday at lunchtime as normal.
Year 10 Work Experience
A reminder that the deadline for Placement request for Year 10 parents is Friday 9th February. Parents have been sent an e-mail with a link to an explanatory letter giving dates and details of next Summer's Work Experience Week for Year 10 students.
