Friday 29th June 2018

Good afternoon,

What a scorcher! Due to the very hot weather this week I have given permission for students to wear Harrow Way PE kit Wednesday through to Friday – it seemed to make a difference! We have decided that students will be allowed to wear PE kit next week until further notice. We will email parents with a return to normal uniform date when this is decided.

No matter how long one has worked in the profession and seen students come and go the end of Year 11 celebrations, at Harrow Way do bring some emotions to the fore. The Year 11 prom was a very special occasion. They arrived for their masquerade ball in style and the crowds were out to support. Some videos can be viewed on twitter and pictures on our website here.

Prom 2018

You spend five years working with students: you watch them grow and develop. And there comes a point when they have to leave. I talked in their leavers assembly, in my very short speech, about them all being on life's journey. They have come to a crossroads and they can now make choices about what their futures might be and bring. They have a very strong attitude and have learnt the Harrow "Way".

I want to take this opportunity to say a very public thank you to all the staff present (and past) who have worked to support and challenge these young people over the last five years.

We have a potent cocktail; staff willing to work terrifically hard with and for children, and students willing to engage with all staff, day in and day out. The Prom really emphasises to us all why we do this job and why it is important to us. Education and schools are much more than many of us can articulate.

Assembly - House
Sport Day was the main topic for this week's House assemblies, with team sheets needing to be worked out and returned to Mr Haysom by the end of today.

Induction Day and Evening - Tuesday 3rd July
We look forward to meeting our new students on Induction Day and parents at 6pm for Induction Evening.

We are aware that England are playing Colombia in the World Cup and that it will be very warm so we have decided to condense the evening so that you will be able to leave just before 7pm (staff will be available after that time if you still need to ask questions).

Please try to arrive early with your forms and documents so that we can make a prompt start.

Progress Reviews
Parents of Years 7-10 students can find your child's Progress Review available to view on the Parent Progress View and SIMS Learning Gateway. If you have not yet signed up for the Parent Progress View then please follow this link to the form.

INSET Day
On Thursdays teachers spent the morning sharing their retrieval practice ideas. Retrieval practice is where students are asked to retrieve previously learnt information from their brains. Research shows that practicing this regularly leads to the information being retained for far longer. Teaching staff had a wealth of ideas and the buzz in the room was fantastic. The rest of the day was devoted to evaluating our work this year and planning for next year.

Sporting Events

Swimming District Champions
Year 9/10 girls came away District Champions at the Gala last week, and the boys came second. A great achievement, well done!

Hampshire Youth Games
On Friday 22nd June 2018, the Year 7 netball team went to a Netball Tournament at the Hampshire Youth Games. On a very warm sunny day in Aldershot, the team were just pipped to the post by one point and came 4th place out of eight schools. After qualifying to play in the games earlier in the year, this is a huge achievement for the team, finishing in fourth place out of all the teams in Hampshire. Full a full report click here.

Knights Enham Sports Day
Mrs Salmon took her Year 7 Leaders to help at Knights Enham Junior School's Sports Day this morning. Headteacher Mr Inglis was very impressed "I just wanted to thank and commend the sports leaders who helped out at our Sports Day morning. They were not only very helpful and enthusiastic but a real credit to you and Harrow Way School. It was lovely to see how much they have grown as individuals in the year that they have been with you."

Rome
Our Year 11's seem to be enjoying the sunshine (and probably gelati) on their visit to Rome, as you can see from our Twitter feed!

Berlin Trip
Year 9 & 10 History students travelled to Berlin last week. First stop the Asisi Panorama which gave stunning views of East and West Berlin. They also visited Sachenhausen Concentration camp and Checkpoint Charlie Museum, allowing the students to consolidate their knowledge around the Rise of the Nazis and the impact of the Cold War.

Lulworth Cove
Our Year 8 students are exploring the coastal process and landforms and the impacts of human activity at Lulworth Cove. They will be practising data collection in preparation for KS4. They are enjoying wonderful weather as can be seen by this image.

Year 10 Showcase
This term's Year 10 Showcase featured 35 students from the Dance and Acting courses performing what was, in effect, an exam. This evening of dance and drama was the culmination of their Year 10 studies and produced work which counted for as much as 50% of their final grades. Ms Walker's dancers have been working with a professional dancer to choreograph and perform a piece in a high energy, street style. Mr Manson's actors performed a short comedy about falling awkwardly in love. The play, Three written by acclaimed playwright Harriet Braun for the National Youth Theatre last year, tackles the sensitive subjects of love, loss and LGBTQ relationships. The cast handled those issues with maturity and humour, creating an excellent evening of love and laughs.

Library Volunteer
Hampshire Book Awards

We welcomed over 100 year 8 students and staff from 9 secondary schools on Thursday for the Hampshire Book Awards voting day. This award is in its thirteenth year and is run by Hampshire County Council Schools Library Service. The winner was Instructions for a Second-hand Heart By Tamsyn Murray. This is a book which led to many interesting discussions about the value of organ donation. Particular thanks go to our participating Year 8 students who came in on an INSET day in order to cast their vote and Mrs Burningham for organising the day.
