Welcome come back! We have had a very positive first week back. Over the Easter break we had a successful trip to Paris, and pictures can be seen on our Twitter feed.
Invited Year 11 students came into school over Easter to complete the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence), which is a good qualification for the workplace that tests ability in Microsoft Office. We had an amazing three days with our students working so hard. At the last count 34 students have passed the qualification, which also counts as a GCSE grade C.
The roof repair work at the front of the school is now finally finished and the scaffolding removed. The boys' toilets in the English block started their revamp over the holiday and work is nearing completion. Just the girls' toilets in the English block to do now. The Local Authority has funded the £30,000, which is good news.
Congratulations to Mrs Law who completed the London Marathon on Sunday, and also to Miss Campbell, who completed the Southampton Half-Marathon.
Assemblies
As you will be aware this year marks the 50th Anniversary of Harrow Way opening its doors in September 1967. I mentioned this in assembly to the students this week and we had some time reflecting on the decade it all started in 1960! When looking at this amazing decade, I could have chosen from such a wide range of events, movements, and people – I was spoilt for choice! But for me, the iconic image of the 1960s comes from the end of the decade. The moon landings still represent the zenith of human scientific achievement.
However, my assembly did not focus on John F. Kennedy, Neil Armstrong, or Buzz Aldrin, but another hero of the space programme – and one you may not have heard as much about. That hero is Katherine Johnson. More information can be found on our website here. If you are an ex-Harrow Way student take a trip down memory lane and like our Harrow Way 50 facebook page.
On Monday we had a very successful English Literature Revision day at The Lights. Our Y11s looked every bit the college students in their civvies with their clipboards listening to short lectures from the English department on the key texts that they have been studying. We were proud of their hard work and maturity and thank the English teachers involved for planning and delivering such an engaging experience. Here is a link to this term's Exam Timetable.
On Tuesday the Year 10 prefect team spent the day preparing for their new roles by taking part in various team building activities in the grounds of Norman Court. They also explored ideas around appropriate ways to communicate and considered the importance of prefects in tackling bullying around school.
Year 10 students have spent a day at the University of Winchester this week to discover what going to University really feels like.
Netball fans will be watching Team Bath play Severn Stars this evening. These matches are always exciting and the core values of integrity, team work and youth development of Team Bath give our students a great opportunity to see good role models.
Although the weather didn't join in this week, Summer Term means summer sporting activities are now available after school. Rounders, Cricket, Tennis and Athletics Clubs are now on offer, as well as the Leadership Academy. A list of Summer Clubs can be viewed on the website and we would encourage your children to participate.
