Friday 25th May 2018

Good afternoon,

Our industrious and perhaps a little anxious Year 11 students have had a busy week; some will have completed a third/half of their exams already by the close of play this afternoon. I have to say that, once again, we have been mightily impressed with their attitude and application. (To say well done we bought them all an ice cream when they came out of their 2 ½ hour English Literature Paper 2 today!) Even in these times of great (examination) uncertainty, it SHOULD still be the case that 'you get out what you put in', so we are all confident (with several body parts crossed) of success this summer. Link to Revision Plan and Exam Timetable.

I'm sure, like me, you have seen some of the TV programmes over this last week marking the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster and the Manchester bombing. It's unbelievable to think a whole year has passed. As a community we observed the national minute's silence at 2.30pm Tuesday, 22 May, in remembrance of those who were killed in the Manchester Arena bombing . It certainly brings it all flooding back and makes your heart bleed for those bereaved families. I'm sure we will all spare them a thought at this time. The message of tolerance, acceptance, patience and forgiveness remains as pertinent as ever.

This week the senior team have undertaken a number of learning walks visiting classrooms across the school. Our focus was on retrieval practice. Retrieval practice is a learning strategy where we focus on getting information out. Through the act of retrieval, or calling information to mind, our memory for that information is strengthened and forgetting is less likely to occur. Retrieval practice is a powerful tool for improving learning.

Kit Malthouse MP
We have the pleasure of welcoming Kit Malthouse MP to Harrow Way this morning. Mr Malthouse was given a tour of the school and answered questions posed by Year 9 students.

School Musical 'The School of Rock' - Our annual musical productions have gained a wonderful reputation for their professionalism and this one really did have it all; a huge and inclusive cast, superb music and sound, some spectacular individual performances and an overall feel-good factor that sent every member of the audience home with a smile on their face.

These shows do not happen overnight. The final production was the result of months of hard work and commitment after school, at weekends and during holidays. On behalf of everyone lucky enough to have seen the production, I would like to say a huge well done to all involved.

Assemblies
Celebration assemblies have been held this week for Years 7-10. On Tuesday, Year 7 students with excellent behavior and attendance were celebrated through the celebration draw as well as a "Harrow Way Rules" Kahoot where all Year 7 pupils joined in on the fun. On Wednesday Year 8 celebrated their great success in the UK Maths Challenge and looked at the pictures of the visit to Winchester University to raise aspirations. Pupils with 100% Attendance this 1/2 term and 0 Behaviour points were rewarded with an Ice lolly at lunch time. Year 9 held a celebration of attendance, behaviour and progress with individual prizes awarded. Highlights included the following students coming first in each tutor group, for exceeding expectations in every lesson and maximising stamper totals: 9RKS – Kitty Gray (1180), 9EM – Ethan Brown (1098), Nancy Hurt (1086), 9BPC - Leah Fennell (1008), Donna Doig (997) and 9DJM – Molly Carter (936); recognition of all those participating in Andover athletics; and those who have achieved excellence outside of school including James Pay, who came 3rd in the 800m at Winchester Wessex League. Celebrations concluded with a media show of Mr Cade's favourite snaps of students in action throughout the term.

District Athletics
The school had a successful day at the Year 9/10 District Athletics on Tuesday this week. An amazing 12 students have qualified for the County Athletics, including Michael Summerfield, Beth Matthews and Adam Robinson.

Dance Visit
Miss Walker took 20 Year 9 dancers to watch the Andover College students' dress rehearsal for their final showcase. They showcased work using a number of different dance styles and the Year 9's were really inspired by their work. It was also lovely to see so many ex students performing in the show, many of whom already have their places to study dance at University next year.

Andover Library Volunteering Opportunity
Mandy Warner from Hampshire Library Service spoke to years 9 and 10 this week about an exciting opportunity to volunteer at Andover Library during the summer, supporting 4 to 11 year olds in the national summer reading challenge. This kind of experience is welcomed on prefect, college and job applications as well as on personal statements for college and university. One of our ex-students who took part now has a paid weekend role so the benefits of taking part are there to see! More information is available from our school library and from the Reading Agency's Reading Hacks website.

Wishing you all a pleasant half-term break.
