I am writing this from the ASCL (Association of School and College Leaders) Annual Conference in Birmingham! On Friday and Saturday, 1,200 colleagues from schools and colleges across the country come together to hear the latest policy news, get new ideas and inspiration, experience some of the best CPD available, share best practice and network to find solutions to some of the sector's biggest challenges. The Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds MP and her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools Amanda Spielman will be talking shortly.
Follow the white cap and never ever give up!
I've seen that clip many times, but it never seems to lose its magic. There must be a pithy revision point to be made here. We'll let you work that out for yourselves Year 11 with 'not very long to go'.

There simply is no stronger resolve than that of the inspired human spirit. Dave Wottle - Never Give Up. Sometimes life is hard. It's the same for everyone. And it's even more difficult if you started slower than others. But if you believe that you can win despite the setbacks – you will. Have faith in yourself!
House Assemblies
This week in house assemblies, results from the whole school photography competition were shared; the judging was extremely difficult because the judges were blown away by the standard of entries. The overall winner was Darian Simpson from Kestrel House. Well done Darian!
Students were told about all the future house competitions coming up including core subject challenges from Maths, English and Science plus the House Quiz on Tuesday after school, 3-4pm in the audi. Students just need to turn up with a friend to earn points for their house!
Prizes were awarded to individuals with the most stamps in each year group and the the overall tutor groups from each house with the most stamps.
Andover College Art
Harrow Way Year 9 Art classes were visited this week by four A-Level Fine Art students from Andover College, including our own ex-student Lou Bowman. Richard Barnfather introduced the creative courses available at the college and the array of career paths they led to. Year 9 students were guided through an assortment of sketchbooks and able to ask questions about life at the college.
INSET day
Staff spent the Thursday morning in a variety of primary schools to look at the work Year 6 do. We spent the afternoon in departments discussing what we had seen and how we can use it to maximise transition for Year 7. A very exciting and interesting day.
Prefect Training
An inspirational morning hosted by Chloe from The Life Skills Company, with a focus on the following:
- Being a Good Role Model (this includes being 'seen' around the school, non-verbal communication skills and dealing with difficult behaviour from other students including peers)
- Getting The Best Out of Me and Others (looking at the strengths and weaknesses in their own personalities and the personalities of others to work out how they can communicate and work together effectively through emotional intelligence)
- Public Speaking (having confidence to stand in front of a crowd and get their message across)
Year 10 Prefects in attendance demonstrated exemplary behaviour and were a credit to the school; well done all for your commitment, positivity and engagement.

Year 8 Parents Evening - Thursday 28th March
Year 8 parents have been sent an email with instructions to book appointments for Parents Evening. The website is now open and appointments can be booked now. As I mentioned previously, parents should make appointments with teachers of subjects which their child might choose to study as a "Pathway" option in Year 9: for example, Music, Drama, ICT/Computer Science, RE, History, Geography; PE; Art; Design & Technology/Food Technology. If your child has no interest in continuing to study one or more of the optional subjects in Year 9, please do not make an appointment with that subject teacher unless you have a particular concern that you wish to discuss.
Year 9 Curriculum Booklets
Year 9 parents have received the Pathways Booklet and an appointment letter this week. Our Curriculum Evening is on Monday 18th March at 6.30pm when staff will be giving short presentations on their subjects. Parents and Year 9 students will then attend a meeting with senior staff on 20th or 21st March to discuss and finalise their subject choices for Year 10 and 11.
Bingo Evening
The Enterprise Club are running a prize bingo night here at Harrow Way School on the 29th March 2019 in the Auditorium, starting at 6pm and finishing around 9pm. Tickets are £5 for 6 games and money raised will be donated to the Countess of Brecknock Hospice.
Sporting Fixtures
Year 7 Boys played a football match against The Clere and won 7-1. The Year 7 Boys Rugby team also played against Wellington. They were trailing 25-5 at half-time. Following a pep-talk and reorganisation the boys managed to pull back to 35-25. Great teamwork and perseverance!
