Today we held our last assembly with our outgoing year 11 students after their Physics examination. The time had come to say a heartfelt goodbye and good luck. Mr Reed and the Year 11 tutor team put together a fantastic show and helped Year 11 to walk down memory lane, revisiting all the wonderful times that we have had together at Harrow Way. Goodbye messages from their tutors and other members of staff were played, while students enjoyed a Harrow Way cup-cake.

We are so proud of the year group and want to thank them for their hard work this year. We wish them well and look forward to celebrating at the Prom at 6.30pm on Friday 28th June at the Holiday Inn, Winchester and also on Results Day on Thursday 22nd August. We have prepared students to the best of our ability for these exams. They are a benchmark, a stepping stone, an entry-pass to the next phase of one's life, and I have every confidence that our Year 11s will absolutely do themselves justice.
75th Anniversary of D-Day
I have been fascinated by the commemorations in recent times of the ending of WWI and, of course, this week the 75th anniversary of D-Day. I'm less fussed about all the pomp and ceremony but I cannot help but become fully absorbed listening to the veterans last week, all in their 90's, recounting their tales form 1944. Their humility, as well as their evident bravery, is truly inspirational. There are so many lessons that our young people can learn from this generation, and indeed vice versa. Marking the 75th Anniversary of D-Day is perhaps particularly pertinent and timely in a period when there are clear threats to democracy, tolerance and other such values; the very things these veterans and their fallen comrades risked and gave their lives for. Surely this is a 'story' we should continue to tell down the generations? Lest we forget!

Assemblies - Tutor Teams
7CSM gave a very informative assembly about what it means to be a Rights Respecting School. They reminded us about the importance of respecting all members of our school community and how respect for others' human rights is a skill we should take with us throughout our lives. Again, I was really that all of the tutor group were involved in planning the assembly, and so many showed the confidence to present to the year group.
8KLG produced a wonderful assembly on the rights of the child and how we as a Year Group can help ensure these rights are maintained in school.
This week 9AJA produced a fantastic Assembly reminding us all of what it takes to be a 'Rights Respecting School'. The whole Tutor group participated and played their part. Great teamwork. To finish, the newly developed Year 9 Rock Band 'Thorn' made their debut performance which was outstanding. We had Matt N on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Lawrence C on lead guitar, Charlie T on drums and Shaun S on Bass guitar. They performed Seven Nation Army and Don't Stop Believing and were very impressive. We are looking forward to seeing them again soon.
Year 10 had a very engaging presentation on the history of Harrow Way as Rights Respecting School. Mrs Gibbs and her Tutor Group decided to retell the tale of the UNICEF mural that has proudly been on display in the Audi since 2009. A great story of how the Harrow Way community came together to create artwork that should inspire the next generation to engage in community and social projects.
Student Success
We have already mentioned Harriet McRae's success in Judo in this eNews. However, as Harriet is now ranked 5th in the Country on the British Judo Cadet League we were excited to learn that she has been selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in September. She has also now gained her Brown belt and starts work on her Black belt. Our congratulations to Harriet and we look forward to hearing about her progress. Good luck in September!
Mikey Summerfield
Congratulations to Mikey Summerfield for winning Hampshire Rugby's U16 Player of the Year (Robbie Keast Award). Mikey is busy getting ready for pre-season training in August at Hartpury College.
