Remembrance
In assemblies this week, we reflected on ways in which students can assess the impact of the war on history and also explore how remembrance has become part of national life in the UK and other countries. Students were encouraged to consider how remembrance has evolved to include World War Two and later conflicts.
As a Rights Respecting School we also considered Article 38 .''You have the right to protection in times of war. If under 15, you should never have to be in the army or a battle.'' Children and young people should never be forced to fight in the armed forces or go to war. This right covers all jobs in a war, so doesn't just apply to soldiers. Two Poems were read in the assembly (Colin McCrae 'In Flanders Field' and Siegfried Sassoon 'Does it Matter?'), followed by the Last Post being played by Mr Pollard, Curriculum Leader for Music.
50th Anniversary Video
As you will be aware this year marks the 50th Year Anniversary, when Harrow Way opened its doors in September 1967. Throughout the year we have had a number of activities taking place to mark this special occasion. Most recently we took a whole school photograph (now displayed in Reception) and today we have launched our 50th Anniversary Video through the decades. The tone is light hearted and both staff and students had good fun making it. The Video was produced by John Baxter who many of you will know and remember as a key member of staff at Harrow Way for 40 years! Do have a watch here; you can also read our 50th Anniversary Newsletter.
Year 11 Mocks English and Maths
The Year 11 mock exams for English and Maths take place during the week of 13th November. Please follow this link for the full timetable. In order to give students and staff a clear idea of where focus and support may be needed it is important that students revise fully for these exams alongside the preparation that students will be doing in class.
It is important that students remind themselves of the topics that they have been studying in Maths up to this point and focus on the poetry anthology and the play 'Othello' for English.
We would also like Year 11 parents to be aware that Zone 11 is up and running for Year 11 students on Thursdays from 6.00 to 7.30 pm; offering an hour and a half supported revision session followed by a chip supper. Each week a different subject is supported.
Educational Visits
Groups have visited Hampton Court and Cadbury World this week and our girls' football team have experienced a top level ladies' game, watching Chelsea progress in the Champions' League. On Tuesday, 51 Year 8 students went to Hampton Court Palace. They had the opportunity to see the home of Henry VIII, looking at how he lived and how the Tudor court would have operated. In addition to this everyone took part in an Elizabethan workshop aiming to encourage students to empathise with the Elizabethan Councillors about what they would have done in the event of the death of the Queen. Overall a very successful and enjoyable day. 45 Year 8 students had a fantastic day at Cadbury World on Thursday. They learnt how Cadbury's has changed over the last 170 years and established itself as a market leader. Pupils watched chocolate making demonstrations and learnt how the cocoa beans are harvested and used to make chocolate. Pupils also visited the largest Cadbury shop in the world! Images can be viewed here.
Applications
I am delighted to share with you that first indications are that we will be heavily oversubscribed again next year. This is wonderful news and I am incredibly proud of our school community.
INSET day - Tuesday 14th November
The Focus for our INSET Day will be teaching and learning – an important part of our 3 year Plan and Journey to Outstanding - see page 11 of this booklet. This year we have used the mantra from Professor Dylan Wiliam: "All teachers need to improve their practice—not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better."
Volunteering
Do you or your relatives have any spare time to support our Year 11 students in examinations? A number of our students are entitled to "Access Arrangements" such as extra time to complete exams or someone to scribe for them in order to maximise their chances of achieving their potential. If you would be willing and available to support students in their mock or main exams, please contact Mrs German at school. All training will be provided.
